Wilderness Walk: Wild Calder Odds

I'd imagine Faber is more worthy of being discussed with regards to Wild players odds to win the Calder rather than Rossi or Wallstedt.

I get that Faber is probably not going to generate a boat load of points, but if I was forced to put money on which Wild rookie is going be in the Calder discussion it would be Brockoli

Isn't this just kind of typical of Faber's game, though? Brockoli. He's an eat your veggies kind of player. He balances out the on ice mix with a steady helping of that dreaded 4th food group.

I mentioned in another thread yesterday that it seems like we're seeing some new authors on the site. I believe introductions are in order!

Did the site just expand writers (a good sign of success), or was there some turnover? Inquiring minds want to know!

Also, I read off the rumors page that Elias Lindholm may be willing to resign in Calgary. Apparently, he just went back to Sweden for the summer and will deal with the contract when he's back in North America. If this, indeed, is the case, then I believe we focus our attention of plucking Elias Pettersson out of Vancouver.

Many of the Euro players do contracts this way. They believe the contracts will take care of themselves, but they really want the down time over the summer to not worry about hockey and get away. We tend to forget this about a different culture type of player. 

This also may have been one reason why Johansson signed his deal right away. Perhaps it was before he went back to Sweden and he just got it handled so he could have his time away from the game?

If he isn’t going to put up a bunch of points he definitely isn’t going to win the Calder.

I think he has the least chance out of the 3.

he’s just not that type of player.

seems like one of those players that will be heavily underrated, under appreciated and a very important piece but we will see.

Maybe I was unclear...I think there are going to be some high power forwards  (Bedard/Cooley/Fantilli) who are going to set the bar very high this season for Calder.  It's my guess that it's going to be a forward this season, and any defenseman to be part of the discussion this year would have to back a dump-truck full of points to the voters doorsteps.

A 'Cale Makar' performance of 12G/38A in 57 games is a compelling argument.

A 'Mo Seider' performance of 7G/43A in 82 games probably wouldn't do it this season.

I see what you mean.

this year is absolutely stacked with forwards, so I agree.

fantilli, calsson, bedard, Cooley, Knies etc

there’s some really good defenseman such as Hughes, Clark, Zellweger so the competition will be tough no matter the position.

I just hope our guys take a strong step forward this year.

I would say Brockoli uncooked with perhaps some dip is okay. Steamed with butter is too soft and savory. Can't say I like that analogy for a defenseman. Now Brockoli casserole is a core piece around Thanksgiving and Christmas through Easter, so I'm drawing some parallels there with a defenseman who brings something substantial to the table for the whole season. I think raw and unwashed is the only way, cause you gotta have the grit and durability. Little too bland for the Calder IMO.

Faber will have an impactful year for the Wild and he has already opened some eyes around the league with his playoff performances. He is no secret anymore and will not sneak up on anyone or surprise them to much.

Being a "D" player you are usually forfeiting any opportunity to win a Calder unless you are a generational player and then its still a crap shoot. If you score that much to compare to the forwards, your D is gonna get hurt somewhere.

At this point, I don't care about awards, they are nice to be recognized by the league, but it usually takes a miracle to pry them away from the East Coast teams here in the Midwest by the national media of the NHL.

My reward is if Faber kills it on the ice this year and grows more defensively and offensively, I TAKE IT, as the recognition and reward by his peers is more valuable for the team than an individual award!

I think what might be kind of interesting is how Brockoli fairs going against these highly talented offensive players. If they're not scoring while he's on the ice, that's good enough for me. 

We've already got McDavid's kryptonite in the form of an Ek/Brodin counter. Add Faber to the mix could lead to a lot of frustration from these highly paid offensive geniuses. And that frustration makes me smile!

Perhaps it is, but Brockoli flows off the keyboard, and is a perfect blend of his name. He does a lot of the little things so well, the things the veggie group will do. Perhaps Fiber could be used? But I really like Brockoli.
