  • Wilderness Walk: Sammy Walker Gets The Call

    That's Wild

    • The Minnesota Wild had to play a player short in Tuesday's win over the Montreal Canadiens due to Matt Boldy getting injured and being on the road. Well, they managed to get a full roster now with the team recalling Sammy Walker to provide some spark to the lineup. [The Hockey News]
    • Brock Faber has arguably been the Wild's top defenseman this season. It certainly feels like with Jared Spurgeon out, it is his blue line and could make it a top-tier one once the injured captain returns. [Hockey Wilderness]

    Off the trail...

    • Some storm clouds and misery surrounding the Carolina Hurricanes should pass soon. The team is too good for this start to really make an impact. [Yahoo Sports]
    • Jesse Puljujarvi was once hyped as a can't-miss prospect for the Edmonton Oilers and has had the backing of the hockey fans that like some stats. Well, now he is an unrestricted free agent and without a hockey home. Will he get another shot? [DailyFaceoff]
    • The Ottawa Senators got Josh Norris back from his shoulder injury for the first time on Wednesday night and he ended up scoring two goals. Are the Sens for real? [Sportsnet]

Yay Sammy! Hopefully he can come up and contribute, he was the most deserving of the callups for this particular injury IMO. His style is more akin to Boldy's than what Khaira's is, now if Hartman, Maroon or Moose was to go down then Khaira would be better suited for their role. LFG Sammy!

Also excited to see how Faber handles our old buddy Fiala.

Fiala's probably got the KFAN episode where Guerin spends an hour talking shit about him on loop.  Fifi's gonna tear us up...

I'm nervous to see how we deal with Drew Doughty.  After baiting Kap last season, no way he doesn't keep it up.  Not sure if Maroon is enough motivation to play hockey instead of head games...

Another interesting (to me) note is that Capfriendly is listing Walker as an 'Emergency Call up' but also indicates that the league agreed to have Goose move to LTIR.  So with Walker AND Mermis on our roster, we have an additional $1,075,000 in cap space right now, which means we currently can afford ANYBODY (just one) from Iowa.  Kyle Masters - Yep, Carson Lambos - You Betcha, David Spacek - Of course, Adam Beckman? - Come on down!

So the drawback is that you dont 'bank' cap space when you're in LTIR relief zone, meaning if Goose comes back, we're worse off than before because we didnt accumulate enough money to fit the larger salaries.  I'm curious if that's why Walker is on an 'Emergency Call Up' rather than opening up the flood gates?

These are all good points. To me, I believe Lambos is the next call up as Mermis is really a 7th D to have up there. Lambos would fill Spurgeon's empty slot and Walker fills Boldy's hole. We're home for a few games, but getting Lambos some time, I think, will be real good. I think he's the most NHL ready at this point among the kids, and, getting the debut out of the way is usually a good thing.

As for Doughty, if it were me, I'd send either Moose or Maroon hard into his corner the 1st shift he was out. I'd make it the strategy to throw it into his corner and start it out that way. If anyone so much as sneezes in Kaprizov's direction, well, it will be a very hard night for Fiala and any of their other stars. Doughty is good enough to make it rough on too.

Puljujarvi didn't take advantage of his opportunities. In Edmonton he was kind of an enigma, but when Carolina picked him up at the TDL, he forgot to pack whatever game he still had in Edmonton, and forgot to have UPS send over the rest from Finland. He just never panned out, and was one of my favorites in that draft. I'm not sure what happened to him?

Finally some common sense, he should have had foligno or Hartmann spot on the roster in the first place

Just what we need is for our lineup to get smaller.

He may get smacked around some but if he plays a good chunk of the season it would give him incentive to bulk up. If penaltyman wasn't in the lineup for Walker we wouldn't be getting smaller just higher upside scoring wise.

Is 5'10" and 180 pounds not smaller than 6'0' and 197 pounds?

I was unawares penaltyman was 6'0 197 my bad. He sure as hell doesn't look like it at least in my opinion.

Shoot Walker's 5'10" 180lbs with steel-toed boots and a janitor's keyring on. He's a small fella, saw him in Iowa without his gear on. Like his speed and hope he brings a spark to that 2nd line.

Penaltyman  and foligno have already showed us their ceiling I want to see some Youngbloods.  These two years are the worst of our cap why not get some young guys experience to make a push once we're out of the cap hell years?

We'll see how Sammy Walker looks on the Wild, at least for a short time.

Khaira set up Beckman with a saucer pass to tally the GWG Friday night and Wallstedt stopped 33 of 35 shots to get the Iowa Wild their first win.

Khaira has seemed the most NHL ready of their guys in Iowa, but I imagine they could lose him to waivers if they call him up and send him back down.

Not sure Sammy is doing enough to keep his spot much longer. He has been pretty invisible to me.
