Michael Russo of the Star Tribune tweeted that Backstrom will be receiving $10.25 million over those three years, which comes out to a $3.42 million cap hit each season. If that is indeed correct, the Wild will just have slightly less than $2.5M in cap space for the remainder of the summer.
Backstrom is coming off a season in which he played in 42 games (in a 48 game season), winning 24 games (best in the NHL) while posting a 2.48 Goals Against Average and .909 save percentage. He suffered a hernia injury just minutes prior to the start of Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals against Chicago, and did not play again. It was the second consecutive year that Backstrom has suffered a significant injury.
