Article: David Perron Would Be the Perfect Wild Remedy

Recommended Posts

He signed 2y/$9.5m ($4.75m with Detroit), getting 56 and 47 points respectively.  That's right in line with some of the Wild's 5-7 scorers (Hartman/Faber/Rossi, etc).  If the Wild don't take Gus and his contract out (opening the window to a $5-7m player), Perron at $3.5m-4m wouldn't be an absolute train wreck either.  It would take Hartman and Johansson down the lineup, more in line with roles that make more sense and have less pressure.  Ohgren and Khusnutdinov can be 3rd/4th line unless they prove otherwise.

Kaprizov/Ek/Boldy

Perron/Rossi/Zuccarello

Hartman or Ohgren/Khusnutdinov/Foligno

Hartman or Ohgren/Gaudreau/Johansson

Shaw (bring him back if possible)

I'd prefer Yurov come over, but the Wild need to let Rossi sink or swim rather than be dumb and cut bait.  Picking Perron wouldn't be terrible, if it's a short term wait for Yurov.  They have to just get the Letteris and Lucchini's back in the AHL.  They are what they are: injury calllups: not scorers.

You start by saying Johansson scores 30 goals and you want a 17 goal Perron to take his place? Also just cause he lights up Wild? If he playing for Wild who will he light up then? I agree a another right hander would be nice, and if it's Perron fine with me, I'm all for a right hander, any right hander. 1 year contract tho. Let's go Wild!

Perhaps the biggest impact Perron could have on the Wild is his right-handed shot on the powerplay. We’ve talked about this ad nauseum here. (Okay, it’s been mostly me). However, Minnesota's powerplay lacks any sort of serious right-handed threat opposite Kaprizov. Eriksson Ek has thrived in a net-front role over the past few years. But outside of the Swedish centerman cleaning up garbage in front of opposing goalies, the powerplay is nearly completely reliant on Kaprizov’s magic.

I love it Justin, I've been just as vocal about this as you. My suggestion has been Laine at that spot, thinking that he may be had for 50% retained and be cheap to acquire with his time in the player assistance program. Perron is another candidate to fill that spot.

Both Laine and Perron would be very good for Rossi and Zuccarello. Could we get more out of Laine than the Jets and CBJ have been able to do? I think we can if Mikko mentors him and reminds him that Fins work hard!

However, at this time, I'm fixated on bringing Brady Tkachuk over. To me, that changes the franchises demeanor for a decade. Even if we just got 1 year of cap help, we could afford him after that.

Then, we would need to figure out an RHS forward who can play in Ovechkin's office! I'm thinking the value of Laine is so depleted, we might could get him for Beckman and another prospect.

Listening to the Judd podcast interview with Billy. He asked Billy if kappy was a bright lights big city type or more inclined to stay in minny. Billy hesitantly said bright lights big city. He likes the big city , bright lights and winning .  To me that sounded like kappy is leaving unless Billy really puts a team together quick. I can’t see kappy leaving if we win a round. He’ll probably want to stay and fight . However if they don’t make playoffs next year or flame out then I bet he’s gone. The following season we will be entertaining trades for him all season.
Billy also said he thought Jo Jo and Fred would be better next year. He was going to look for a top 6 forward . He thought out d core is good . That all makes me more inclined to think kappy is leaving because it’s not enough. Like the great one said last night. SIZE wins in the playoffs. You need size . You need big defensemen to win. Gretzky and Carter both said this. It’s no secret size and strength wins in playoffs. Why Billy doesn’t see that is beyond me. Our d core is fine for regular season but not playoffs. Jo Jo and Fred make your bottom 6 impotent.  To win you need everyone playing heavy. Like everyone on Vegas , Colorado , Boston , Florida play heavy. Not just the grinders. Billy understands this but his idea of what guys can really play that heavy game is my concern .
I liked his end season presser until I read this about kappys apprehension to resign. It’s time for Billy to get off his ass and get alpha males on this team so we don’t lose kappy . We can tell ourselves we’re good but it’s what kappy thinks that’s important.  Doesn’t sound like he’s to happy .

This seems like something that should be investigated. If Kaprizov were a Bright Lights Big City guy, wouldn't he be sighted at several venues in Minneapolis? Maybe St. Paul?

This I wouldn't know since I'm out of market, but for those in market, are there examples of him going out on the town often?

I'm not sure I'd characterize him that way, but I would have to admit I have no information on the topic except that he grew up in a rural area.

Does he make trips to Vegas? NYC? Miami? Is he an instagram guy or X? Does he have other buddies here other than Zuccarello?

If Bill Guerin thinks NoJo will be better, he's either lying and NoJo is to help MN get a better draft pick while making losing seem like trying to win, OR Bill Guerin has mashed potatoes between his ears. Do I need to start searching for an FBG 2024 bumper-sticker?

I'd rather the Wild sign Justin Shultz, Erik Johnson, Michael Amadio, and Yakov Trenin from UFA.(3 of 4 probably to make money work, but I would sign Shultz first off.)

Trade Spurgeon, Merrill, for the best return you can get and use that money to sign Bertuzzi, Debrusk, Marchesseault, or perhaps Tofolli & Duclair which would cost together roughly as much as one of the other three.

The Wild could then still inject youth and talent but they'd have Cup winners and experience, plus speed, size, toughness, and scoring.

No offense but adding Perron by itself isn't gonna do jack. I'm still dumbfounded at the NoJo double-down that appears to be happening. That guy is lazy, and aloof. I had given Guerin a lot of credit for a long time. What the heck are they doing with NoJo. he sucked the first time here and was the same way exactly. We all cheered when he broke his collar-bone and was out. MN went to seven games with Vegas after that while being royally screwed by the refs and #97 got brutalized. NoJo has literally had two decent months of hockey in parts of three seasons in MN. What a waste of a roster spot for a total non-factor player. I'd rather take the production of 4th liners from guys that try to be good. If NoJo is trying, he's toast in the NHL. Coasting and puck-watching isn't gonna get it done while MacKinnon & McDavid are obstacles to get out of the West.

Guerin had better get his head out of his ass and focus on the Wild, not Team USA. Eff that Billy, "it's about effing winning" remember??? NoJo is lazy and sucks, everyone agrees.

P.S.

You don't teach grit. Some guys have it.

You don't teach big game players. Some guys have it.

You don't teach size. Some guys have it.

You don't teach mental toughness and discipline. Some guys have it.

Guerin's new chapter we realy liked is getting frick'n old. Good many things he's done, but he's losing people's faith big-time picking NoJo/Foligno as the speed & skill and glue & toughness. Totally the wrong decisions and pretty much exzctly what we thought was gonna happen. NoJo and Foligno both bummed through the season bringing nearly nothing to the overall team good, rather they displayed laziness or poor decision-making and essentially just filler on one of the worst teams in the Central.

The good news is from the Jojo standpoint is if he ever wants another NHL contract after this year he will have to play with his hair on fire like he did when he first got here. Expect Jojo to have a much better year next year because its a contract year.

The Wild need a huge injection of new players some of the line combinations I have seen on this site the past few days have made me laugh.  They aren’t going to change our team.  We need size and speed!!  Rossi, Spurgeon, Freddie, Nojo, Middleton, Gus and any of the fringe AHL or 4th line guys need to be traded this summer.  Anything less will be a failure.  Watch the playoffs.  We are no where near those teams.  Faber should only be signed for 6mm as well nothing more. He struggled against the big fast teams. He still needs to show more against the good teams.  We need 4 new big time forwards and 2-3 new big tree dmen.  Also all the assistant coaches need to be replaced and new blood brought in.  Especially Darby.  We need a whole new mind set! Now will Billy do what it takes?  If he doesn’t he will be on the block to get fired end of next year

I see the wild  like you took 100 dollars to the casino and and tried hitting the homerun playing roulette ,20 dollars, 1 number at 35-1 and lost 80 dollars , now you have 20 left and try babying it on  1 dollar blackjack  1-1 trying to get your money back.     GM BG was handed the last 20 and Liepold said get the money back .     how do i know this senario  dont ask LOL

Justin, I have an article suggestion, but it is on the border of political (while I try not to be). I'm not asking based upon the merits of society but just wondering what the effect is on gaining talent.

There are a few states that impose NO income taxes. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking teams in Florida, Tampa, Nashville, Vegas and Dallas have that advantage and I'm probably leaving one out. This can prove to be a very nice net paycheck improvement.

The question is, what type of an advantage does no income tax have on obtaining players, either by trade (where many have designations) or in UFA? Even to broaden the impact, does this same thing happen in other sports too?

I think it might be a fascinating article if data can be found. My suspicion is that this does have an impact.

Stamkos had offers to play in Toronto. That was well known before he re-signed in Tampa. No income tax means you can take a more team friendly deal and between cost of living at that time in Toronto and taxes, the player takes home the same money, maybe even more.

It's certainly a consideration. Why did Americans Tkachuk and J.Gaudreau leave Calgary. It's not widely reported but you'd have to guess the policies in Alberta around COVID were enough to make anybody wanna flee to FL or Ohio for that matter. Just guessing, but not hard to imagine.

I think MN is in a unique spot. They're a hockey destination with lots of great history at the amatuer level. MN has produced great pros, but the NHL team is still languishing in the wasteland of ho-hum history. That's why they need a leader who can be the focal point and producer that brings the other guys along. Is it Brady Tkachuk? Maybe, but dynasty teams like Chicago, Tampa, Boston, or now Vegas are built around leaders but have depth that completes the puzzle. MN currently has holes in both areas. Too few leaders, too many fringe guys, and young players. They have a nice core, but even then does Boldy, Spurgeon, Rossi, Zuccarelloo, or Foligno have the nickname Mr.Playoffs?

The Wild aren't bad but they need to make some big moves IMO.

I am very concerned about kappy leaving. I think next year will be the most important year in this franchises history. They have to prove to kappy they know what there doing yet are handcuffed in doing so .  If we win a round next year and kappy  still walks, then It is what it is. He wanted to live and work somewhere else. Like a no tax Florida with his friends . However if  Billy falls on his face again next year with his collection of misfits, then  losing kappy is on Craig and bill. They’ve had ample time and knowledge of the situation to do something about it and they didn’t.  It would be devastating to lose kappy and make it harder to attract free agents.
I’m starting to come around to Vegas way of thinking. Buying proven players with draft assets to get what you need now. Let the rest of the league develop kids and try to fit them into playoff rosters. It’s a roll of the dice as to if they’ll preform. We don’t have years of making the playoffs to learn which players are playoff caliber . We need to learn asap so we can entice kappy to stay.  That’s why I’m up for trading prospects and picks. We don’t have time to develop anymore before kappy walks.

Mn fan was asking about kappys social life and if it’s in minny. Idk but I hear tidbits about him spending time in Florida .  I think he is the kind of guy that wants to be on the big stage . I’m not positive but I think he’s friends with Panarin of Nyr.  My uneducated guess is if he leaves it will be for Florida, no tax , Dallas, no tax , nyr , the Mecca of the world or Vegas that goes and gets what it wants and is world leader in entertainment.  I think some of him wanting to leave would be a bigger stage but I also think it’s because he has no peers of his talent on this team. Boldy and Faber aren’t there yet. He’s not a kid an I’m sure it be nice for him to have a peer of his level to drive a team. Nate/cale Eichel/stone , Leon / mcdavid , pastranack /marchand /charlie Mac. . Kucherov/stamkos/ Hedman. Basically another guy with his talent and compete level to play with and drive this team

That's why MN needs to regain their positive trajectory ASAP.

Plan to make the team better and contend while getting a guy to compliment #97 or build good faith. Do it in such a way that if Kaprizov looks like he wants out of MN the Wild aren't screwed if they have to trade him.

Personal I think he wants to win. If MN languishes much longer, the smart move for #97 is to go somewhere he can join a real contender.

I left MN to live in Florida and no State tax is nice. So I certainly wouldn't begrudge Kirill for that. MN has had plenty of time to get organized around him.

I would also look at this related to larger markets as well.  No or lower income tax does seem to play a role but larger markets also seem much more apt to be able to attract elite talent in free agency, perhaps because of additional endorsement opportunities.

Some of those larger markets may not have the lowest income tax, but if there are more abundant endorsement options, there is still a lot more that those markets will offer monetarily just because they are larger markets.

That's not to say that Kaprizov is interested in any endorsements, but in general, there might be players who will sign for less for a playoff team in a larger market knowing that they can recoup what they could have gotten elsewhere with a few endorsements.

Great point.  I now agree that this off-season (net positive trades) along with lightning in a bottle prospect development (The Rat and Ogzy contributing in middle six capacity.  Can Milne or Haidt(sp?) surprise and make big club next season) will dictate whether 97 stays or goes.  Wildcard #1 will be if Yurov joins next summer and he and 97 have crazy chemistry two season's from now, but I fear 97 makes up his mind next season.  Wildcard #2 Guerin has a busy 2025 off-season and brings in the correct free agents that convinces 97 can win in MN.

I don't believe 97's rural roots will be enough to keep him here.  He is the player he is because he has a sociopathic drive to win.  He'll be 28 next off-season.  Where'd the time go?

I kind of assumed that this would be the case for some of the players, especially young players unattached or just with a significant other. Guys with families may want something more like MN has.

The night life in the big city is sometimes the trade off for higher taxes. There are some who would love to play in NYC, or Boston, or Philly. There are also some who would hate it.
