It will be interesting to see how the Iowa Wild do with the influx of defensive talent coming their way. Spacek is gonna sneak up on all of them, cant wait to see this kid hit the ice in IA, hoping to see an article soon. vonlonster67 Verified Member Posted August 14, 2023 Share Posted August 14, 2023 I'm salivating thinking about two Brodin clones joining the big club in Hunt and Lambos. They both have size and and edge to them. Lambos was a highly touted draft pick until COVID hit. His ability to get any playing time in Canada in '20-'21 forced him to go play in another league/team in Finland in their U18/U20 group just to get some development. It took a while for him to get through the change of scenery and some injuries which had him drop down the ranks for the Wild to draft him. (Have we heard that before.) It amazes me how many draft experts/GM's/scouts put so much stock in how he has/had played lately. Top ten to fall to #26. There are the critics of Judd, but he will consider the body of work, similar to the debate on Stramel, similar situation, obviously different positions. Lambos has rewarded and expanded his play, character and leadership on the Winnipeg Ice team and we will see the fruits of that labor very soon in IA. I don't have the stats in front of me, but Spacek and Czechia held Conor Bedard largely in check in the World Juniors. He's got some good bloodlines as his father, Jaroslav Spacek played in the NHL from '98-'12 and looking at the stat line I would be very happy if we got that from a 5th round pick. He's also a hell of a coach for Czechia and guessing he has shared some insight with his son over the years. Noting his father was a 5th round pick by the Panthers. I will admit that I like what Spacek has been able to show so far since he was drafted. That said, he was a 5th rounder for a reason so I'm remaining very cautiously optimistic. I still think Lambos and Hunt have the better upside and have a higher chance of panning out. I would suggest you watch him in IA this year and I'm betting you change your opinion. His skating, physical presence, puck movement, smooth entries suggest he has an opportunity to be an offensive defensemen, possibly PP, so not a 3rd pair D-man. He is a late bloomer after being passed over in his first draft eligible year. He spent four years in the Czech leagues then moved to Canada playing in the CHL for Phoenix Sherbrook and exploded on the scene, The Wild drafted him in 2022 and signed him in 2023 to a three year entry along with other 2nd, 3rd round picks, The Wild have high expectations of him based on what he's shown, not draft level. Technically, that is how the Wild used one of their 3rd pair D-men last season. It's not the standard, but 3rd pairing doesn't necessarily mean that they cannot lead the PP and provide offense. The WJC games I watched had Spacek playing on par with Jiricek. He's got offense and plays an aggressive defense and unlike Addison will take the body. Lambos is already heavier than Brodin, though a little shorter. This is going to be some blue line in Iowa. I anticipate that 1 or 2 may be loaned to the Heartlanders just to get them some ice time.
