  • Will Marco Rossi Sit Out of Wild Training Camp?

The Minnesota Wild still have one large elephant in the room. While this team is preparing for the upcoming season where they transfer the ownership of the roster to their youth, they still have a major restricted free agent still unsigned, in Marco Rossi.

And now, the latest question being raised is whether or not the team and player will let this contract stalemate continue to the beginning of training camp.

As Elite Prospects' Cam Robinson mentioned, is Rossi prepared to sit out and potentially start a very important season on the back foot? If he lets this tough negotiation go through training camp, and if they eventually do reach and agreement to keep him with the Wild for a year or two, but not until the season has already started -- Rossi could underperform if he did not properly prepare for the season, like he would have if he attended training camp.

That's the tough position both the Wild and Rossi might face.

    • Even if it is just a tryout, the Wild bringing in Jack Johnson is a mistake and the wrong decision. [Hockey Wilderness]
    • If the Wild even ponder about trading Jared Spurgeon for a second, they are going to deeply regret it. [Hockey Wilderness]

    Off the trail...

    • When he was traded to the Flyers in the middle of the 2023-24 season, Ryan Johansen claimed he was too injured to play despite playing in a game just days before the acquisition. He sat out for the rest of the season and was under contract for the 2024-25 season as well, but the Flyers cited a material breach of the contract and terminated his deal. Well, there was a messy grievance filed by the NHLPA and Johansen and it was reported on Tuesday that the Flyers won the case. No cap hold of penalty for them. [TheScore]

That only hurts Rossi.  He isn't a Kap level player to justify waiting this out.  It basically gift wraps his spot to Yurov, who can play with better players immediately.  That only makes Rossi look worse if Yurov plays well enough out the gate.

Guerin then can trade Rossi or let him rot at home for nothing.

Prediction: Rossi does get an offer sheet prior to season start.  League GM's wait for bill to shoot his shot on 97.  Once they know how much he has left to spend they calibrate their offer sheet.  Verdict: It's the lowest tier, which bill begrudgingly matches.

Sitting it out is clearly a very risky strategy

But it will work out for the Wild only if Yurov can perform out of the gate + the team does not have any injury in training camp and center position

So its also very risky for the Wild

P-capologist, why would a Kaprizov extension affect what Rossi makes this year? We've got some other guys coming off the books at the end of the year and a raising cap to take care of Rossi after the year.

The 2 are not tied to each other contract wise. But if Rossi gets and signs a low tier offer, it'll just get matched. If he signs something over $7.03/yr. I think Shooter lets him go, and banks the unprotected draft picks.

So P-scout, which team do you think bites on the offersheet?

    How should that work ?

First Kaprisov doesn't need a contract for upcoming season

So it would make sense only if offersheet will be done for at least 2 years. Also I do believe that Kaprisov is not in any rush to sign

He might do only in 2026 before trade deadline

I think this is a big year for Rossi. It's a prove it year for him. Perhaps there's disappointment after not getting a big contract? Take that as motivation. Show Shooter he needs to sign you longterm.

Even if he is on a 2 year bridge deal, he can get his extension next summer.

One way not to show Shooter he needs you is to hold out from training camp. If Rossi has a down year, this will only confirm that belief that he has peaked. I don't buy any of this holdout stuff. It's clearly not in the best interest of the team or the player.

Maybe the contract goes down to right before training camp, but I think Shooter's offer is still on the table and Rossi with almost 0 leverage will have to sign it. Perhaps he negotiates up $250k to save face, but, he's pretty well stuck with around $5m longterm or less on a bridge deal.

Well how can't that be true ? Yes Rossi does have little options for upcoming season and also needs to sign $4.8 on one or two year bridge.

But with another 60 to 70 point season he clearly plays in $7 m category

Exactly. If he signs a 2 year bridge deal at, say $4.5m, he can negotiate next summer for a longterm extension to start in '27. Or, the Wild can trade him. But, after that bridge deal, he'll have arbitration leverage & offersheet leverage.

And, if he puts up another 60-70 pt. season in '25, I'll be on the bandwagon for a longterm deal.

But P-Knuckle that sure seems like a mean thing for another GM to do to bill.  Why would they do that?  So bill has to pay more for Rossi than he wants to leaving him less $ to sign add'l players.  Less buyers in the market leads to lower market prices for other GM's with cash to spend.  That sounds like 3-D chess P-Oria.  Yep, meanwhile thin skin bill talks tough and plays marbles.

Yeah but the time has past for a long term deal with the Wild and I doubt 4.5 mil will do the job .5 mil and above maybe

I really dont think Rossi sits out.  It doesn't seem to be in his character, and it would be just as bad for him as it would be for the team.

Agree with your assessment but what option does he have ?

There is no way  to sign 5 times 5 million contract .

And also 2 year bridge with even lower money is not really a good option

particularly when John Hynes remains as a coach

How many of you work for free? No contract, no play. Everyone says it hurts Rossi more, I disagree. The Wild have nothing in place to replace 60 points...nothing. No Rossi, no equivalent replacement, no playoffs.

EDIT: No playoffs, no Billy and no John. His job literally depends on it, probably second round or bust.

I agree. If my employer is destroying my career then wants to pay me less than market value, I’d get away from them, too.
Can Rossi play in a European league if he refuses a deal from Billy?

This pic brings me back to a simpler time.  bill cut off the dead wood (Suter, parise, stall, etc) and it was a new beginning.  7 years later we’ve got new dead wood + 3-5 prospects who we hope start this season in the starting lineup (and stay in lineup all season).   Is the wait finally over?

He can, but the Wild would still hold his rights.  It would be career suicide I believe.

Hilarious post.  Only suggestion I’d make is that Billy ate John King

There's free, and there's a few million dollars. Nobody is asking Rossi to play for free, even the QO is about $1m. That's not free for 90% of the population.

You keep pushing a narrative that says Guerin is on a hot seat. He just completed a run of 4/5 playoff years with a significant cap penalty. I would suggest that this narrative is way off base and that the owner, his boss, is very happy with the job he has done. As fans, we may not like not having a contender for this season, but his boss is happy.

Do you have evidence that says that Guerin's seat is hot and he's in trouble?

Yes he can. He can play in Europe or in the K. Those would be his options until he's 27, pretty much destroying his NHL career, and the higher earnings that come from that. It is highly doubtful he will get a $4.5m contract in either Europe (Swedish league) or the K. The money's in the N.

One year would not do anything

Switzerland will host world championship in 2026 . Italy Olympics

So also a lot of the best NHL er will be in Europe during upcoming season

But in general any unclear situation after first day of training camp is bad for the player
