Well, it's almost late August and we might be finally getting an end to the saga that has been Marco Rossi's contract negotiations with the Minnesota Wild. And it most likely will end with a whimper.

According to The Athletic's Michael Russo, there has been "significant progress" towards the Wild being able to sign Rossi to a contract and it certainly looks like it is going to be a basic bridge deal.

While a short-term deal makes the most sense for both sides -- the Wild don't want to commit term and dollars to Rossi for some reason, and the player can inch closer to unrestricted free agency with more of evidence that he truly is a top-six center -- it doesn't feel like the dramatic end we were all hoping for. Whether it was maybe trading Rossi for a massive win-now upgrade, or signing the 23-year-old center to a long-term deal that would turn out to be a bargain in a year or two; those were some preferred options compared to a quiet and simple two- or three-year contract.

We have to assume this all gets settled before training camp opens next month.

    • If anyone is going to win this negotiation with Rossi, it's Wild GM Bill Guerin, who played hardball and gets to keep a talented young player for cheap. [Hockey Wilderness]
    • Charlie Stramel has been an interesting prospect to follow from his terrible freshman year in Wisconsin to a true breakout season with Michigan State. Now back with the Spartans and on a roster loaded with incoming top prospects like Cayden Lindstrom and Porter Martone, this might be the opportunity Stramel needs to even further develop. [Hockey Wilderness]

    • The Chicago Blackhawks has committed to one of their top young players, by signing Frank Nazar to a substantial seven-year contract. [TheScore]

Guerin seemed comfortable letting Rossi seek an offersheet. We have no idea how many offersheets were offered to Rossi's agent, but what we do know is none were signed. I would suspect it there were any, they were either to teams Rossi didn't want to go to, or they were too low and would immediately be matched. But, these offersheets wouldn't self destruct in 5 seconds.

So, in negotiating and keeping things within the house, I wonder if there are a few offers that went unsigned that Rossi's agent can present to Guerin and he would listen. Perhaps there is some sort of construction that Guerin can make that is better suited for the Wild but it shows a salary that may be upward of what Guerin was offering in the middle of the season. Would Guerin take this into consideration? It may depend upon the agent and how the agent presents it to him.

I have to agree with Russo on his latest pod, BG is a highly competitive individual who wasn't going to let another team offer sheet one of his guys, all the other GM's know this about Billy.  If anyone offer sheeted Rossi, BG would make sure to find retribution one way or another down the road, my opinion that's the biggest reason Rossi's camp didn't get an offer sheet.

Fedorov's jersey is FINALLY getting retired in DET, and it's going up when the Red Wings play Carolina, the team he signed an offer sheet with, brilliant and hilarious!

i believe 0’s correct with this take   Honest question, doesn’t this make bill a bigger cunt than the GM who offer sheets Rossi   That GM is just playing by the rules ignoring the bill Guerin imposed payback rules

    Using the c-word...really?

    A bit much.

It works in certain situations.  A person who enforces rules on others but doesn’t honor those same rules themself is that situation.  I get sense bill is that guy.
    Great Rossi contract!!
