  • Wild 'Happy To Keep' Marco Rossi If Trade Doesn't Happen

The Minnesota Wild are trying their best to facilitate a trade to send pending restricted free agent center Marco Rossi out of town. But, they need to make it happen under a certain number of guidelines.

According to Daily Faceoff's Anthony Di Marco, the Wild are continuing to have trade discussions surrounding Rossi but are adamant that it should be a hockey trade, to keep Minnesota competitive and get a roster player of equivalent talent back. And if they don't find that perfect deal, they are reportedly happy to keep Rossi.

But, of course, the elephant in the room about this whole "keeping Rossi" thing, is that they would need to re-sign the player and that's partly why we are here in the first place. Rossi is apparently demanding too high of a contract for the Wild to handle. Would anything really change if a trade didn't come together and we're suddenly days away from training camp with Rossi still not signed? Maybe.

Rossi is not yet eligible for arbitration, so the team or player cannot decide to get a one- or two-year deal done with a judge moderating in between them. The Wild and Rossi's camp would need to actually agree to a deal. Maybe it could just be a one-year contract at something like $4 million, just so that Rossi can get something resembling of a deserved pay increase but also clearly a bargain due to the circumstances. This is pure guesswork, but Rossi does seem like a player that doesn't want to miss playing games because of a contract negotiation.

We will have to see how this continues to play out, but the new added wrinkle that the Wild could just end up keeping Rossi -- most likely thanks to the free agent pool drying up -- is a little lacking in the drama department.

Not many days left, and a lot of the supposed perfect fits are gone.  That Peterka one is gonna sting on both the money amount comp and the realistic trade value.  One of those has to give, and neither seem to be in Guerin's favor.

I cannot believe that Guerin could not pull off  Trade for JJ Peterka...with Rossi as the main piece.   Given the modest return that Buffalo received for him it wouldn't have taken more than Rossi and another piece (perhaps Chisholm, a mid-level prospect, or a non-first round draft pick).  Missed opportunity....and I'm sure whatever happens with Rossi now will not be as good as a Peterka trade would have been.

BUF needed a RH defenseman badly, but I would've thought Rossi and Spacek could've gotten it done, good greef.  JJP signing $7.7Mx5, Utah is getting built pretty solid.

i would bet bill offered Rossi+ and BUF said no thanks.  Fair or not Rossi's market value is not what his agent thinks.  I'm less worried about Rossi getting a crazy offer sheet in next weeks.  Gonna be fun to watch it play out.

I guess it's down to Boeser now as a UFA.  I actually prefer Boeser over Peterka for similar money.

You're kidding, right? He's five years older, has already peaked and is a much bigger defensive liability. He would be a fill in vs. a franchise player you can build around. Who do you think Kaprizov would rather have on his line?

Freddie G traded to Seattle.  Good luck to Fred, and one less flavor of vanilla in our lineup.

Hmmm. I didn't mind him as a 4th line C, but hopefully the Wild can land someone you want to play higher in the lineup.

It does open up some long-term money, which could help the Wild's future and Stramel could be pushing for that 4th line C role in a couple of years.

The Athletic dropped believe the Wild had possibly offered Rossi for Peterka, but Buffalo favored adding the RHD defenseman with size that Utah had, and weren't excited about adding an undersized scorer like Rossi.

    They also noted the following:

    Quote

On a three-year term, Evolving-Hockey estimates Rossi is a $5.262 million player this summer. On a five-year term, the site has him at $6.067 million. On a seven-year term, it’s at $6.688 million

I understand Rossi not signing the 5x$5M offer that was presented, but I imagine they'll find a way to reach a deal somewhere in the middle. Perhaps a 4x$5.5M?

No boeser soft as fuck!!!! I'd rather have Merril play top 6 than Boozer.

Of course they are happy keeping him.  And they would be happy for him to move on in a trade if the Wild felt they got a better side to the trade.  They would probably be perfectly fine with getting a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd in a RFA offer as well.

Face it, this is a business and the Wild have an asset that is valuable.  Offering that asset up for auction is perfectly fine.  I doubt that there is a riff between the two, that the media has put out there.  Rossi probably wants to play hockey in the NHL next season.  So, he either plays with Minnesota or he plays with a team that he is traded to or is offered a RFA deal.  But at the end of the day his rights are owned by Minnesota.  If he wants to leave he will sign a bridge deal.  And during that deal he will have to perform in order to get paid on his next contract.  Or he will sign a long contract at his market value and play for Minnesota for ten plus years.

People act like the GM is special in the head for not extending Rossi.  If they extended him they would be stuck with him as is, which isn't a terrible thing.  But extending him would have eliminated the possibility of flipping him for something better.
