Hockey is just around the corner and in just a couple weeks we will be watching grainy footage of some minor Minnesota Wild prospects take the ice.

Formally announced by the team on Tuesday, the Wild are once again hosting the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase and it's taking place from September 12 to 14 at TRIA Rink.

The entire roster for this prospect showcase is available here, but there are a couple of key names that will be out on the ice a week or so before Wild training camp even starts.

Danila Yurov and Zeev Buium will be tied to the hip as the Wild's top prospects and two players who are expected to hang around for a lot long. The young centerman and top young blueliner are projected to make the Wild already and have been all summer long, so this feels more like a formality than anything for them. How they perform among their peers shouldn't play more of a role than just being able to warm up for camp while wearing Wild colors.

Hunter Haight is another player to keep an eye on. The center had a pretty good rookie campaign on a terrible AHL Iowa team, so how he follows that up will be interesting. Same goes for Riley Heidt who has somewhat plateaued in junior hockey and needs to show something that the pro level.

Recent draftees Adam Benak, Carter Klippenstein, and Lirim Amidovsky, will obviously be players to keep an eye on as well.

The Wild will be hosting the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues for this miniature showcase and both Wild games (on Sept. 12 and 14) will be livestreamed on wild.com.

I like the playoff salary cap, that should help teams that aren't like Vegas.

Less than 2 weeks away before the season starts to ramp up. Looking at the roster, there are a couple of interesting updates:

    Yurov- 6'1" 195

    Heidt- 5'10" 194

    Buium- 6' 192

All 3 of these players are coming in above their listed weights which were likely from their draft years. Are they estimated? I don't know, I don't think they've weighed in yet with the organization.

This would suggest that all 3 have been working out. Yurov was expected as information about him in Russia was likely classified. But I do like Heidt and Buium growing. I'm hoping it's all muscle.

It's a great adustment by the league and players association.  It still allows teams to change lineups between games.  Effectively allowing some players to rest or have a replacement player at a relatively equal value as a possible injury replacement.

I also like how they force the team to list 18 players and 2 goalies for each game so they can't just shorten the bench with high paid players.

Actually, I'd kind of like to see how a shortened bench would work out for a team. Can a team list the 18 and 2 by having "empty" in any of those slots?

I don't believe the specifics have actually been written yet.  Just the pointed highlights.  I could be wrong about that.  But my interpretation was that you had to have 20 players listed with no empty slots.
