Minnesota Wild prospect Danila Yurov is a Gagarin Cup champion after his Metallurg team ended up winning in the Finals to take it all. The forward played a significant role in the championship and that only furthered our collective anticipation for seeing him in a Wild sweater as soon as possible.
Well, unfortunately, according to a report, that will not be happening until next year. According to Michael Russo of The Athletic, the Wild have attempted to bring the young Russian forward overseas but were unsuccessful. Now, they are just waiting until next year.
"As of now, the Wild have tried to sign him to no avail and are expecting him to sign a one-year extension in the KHL and come over for 2025-26. We’ll see in the coming days if winning the championship Wednesday changed his mindset, but right now the Wild are expecting him a year from now." -- The Athletic
While it is unfortunate, it is a blessing in disguise. Yurov coming over now would suddenly mean a huge influx of young talent that is trying to get on this NHL roster, and potentially squeezing each other out of a spot.
Liam Ohgren, Marat Khusnutdinov, and Riley Heidt, are just some forwards who are trying to play their first NHL season -- and some are projected to be on the roster more than others -- but add Yurov to the mix and suddenly, the Wild would have to have a lot of players in the AHL trying to develop or playing minimal NHL minutes.
Yurov can continue to hang out in the KHL, be his team's go-to offensive creator, get more experience playing center, and then come here next year fully ready to be a regular contributor at the NHL level.
