All eyes were on Marat Khusnutdinov on Thursday night as he made his NHL debut against the Anaheim Ducks. And while a 2-0 result allows little room for him to actually earn his first points, he still left the game making a large and favorable impression on essentially everyone who was watching the game.
The 21-year-old center was centering the Wild's third line, in between Marcus Foligno and Frederick Gaudreau -- not a whole lot of offensive opportunity there -- and was just an absolute hound on the puck. For someone who played a full KHL season and then came over to continue playing professional hockey at a high level, with all the stress of moving across the world, Khusnutdinov looked tireless.
In 11:54 time-on-ice, Khusnutdinov didn't take any shot attempts, or put on any display of individual skill, but his efforts did not go unnoticed. Hell, he won six of his nine faceoffs, and that is more than welcome.
He looked more than comfortable in a checking role. Hopefully he won't play the rest of his season down in the bottom-six and earn zero points, but he has clearly shown that he has the foundations to be the perfect center that the Wild want.
