The Minnesota Wild are able to sign their superstar Kirill Kaprizov to a contract extension on July 1 and talks have already been swirling for months now. Obviously, the team wants to keep their best player and one of the best wingers on the planet. So much so that in a recent Q&A, Wild owner Craig Leipold made it clear that a whole lot of focus is going into that contract negotiation.

“Well, it’s a priority,” Leipold told NHL.com. “There’s no doubt. There’s no doubt. We want Kirill. He’s a big part of our future. We know that. Billy [Guerin] has already been thinking about it. How do we go about this? We’ve got to figure out exactly what the cap’s going to be. It’s an important part of our strategic plan to get him signed for as long as we can.”

Leipold brings up an important aspect to this. We are not certain what the salary cap ceiling is going to be for the 2025-26 season and where it can grow from there when Kaprizov's hypothetical new deal kicks in. From there, they can carve out a percentage to keep Kaprizov. And with the cap reportedly going up at least several millions of dollars in the coming years -- certainly more -- we could be seeing a massive number.

But who cares? Kaprizov is electric and the Wild need him. Sign the papers, please.

What else was the owner going to say?

Personally, I think we're another move away from getting a contract signed. Obtaining Jiricek was one big move in the right direction. I think gaining Alex Tuch will be another.

What is also in this contract is whether or not the team is ready to win now. The trade for Jiricek shows that Guerin has made the switch from rebuilding to going for it now.

We are a large scoring forward short of being able to make noise. So, I'll just call it the Tuch class. I'm also thinking that Johansson and Zuccarello probably need to be subtracted before we really make noise. Both are not quite the embodiment of playoff hockey. Some may also point to Rossi in this, I don't because we haven't seen him perform in playoff scenarios.

Interestingly, after a horrific 0-6 start to the year for the Iowa Wild, they've gone 9-5-1 in their last 16.

After the recent 3 game stretch where Iowa outscored their opponents 14-3, Lambos is up to a +5 on the year, which is 2nd best among defensemen on the team behind 27-year old Joseph Cecconi, who's leading the Iowa Wild at +12.

The Iowa Wild started the year with a lot of new players and some injuries, but might actually be turning things around with some positive developments. Too early to tell maybe, but things aren't looking as hopeless as they were early on.

The odd thing was, Cecconi was playing 3rd pairing with Peart in Charlotte. He didn't look really outstanding, I'm betting he's had some pretty good luck.

I was thinking someone outside of the organization as I was already planning on the arrival of Yurov, The Wall, and Buium. I'm thinking someone in the Tuch class, a large, fast forward with skill.

Isn't this old news? I thought CL announced six weeks ago to all of the leagues GM's and Kaprizov's agent that nobody has more money than he does to give Kaprizov. Or is this just a reminder?

Cap & money is all that matters here - yeap

    The rest is irrelevant

nothing to worry about then, cause Wild will offer 500k more and that surely will seal the deal for poor money hungry Ruski

    I found this interesting:

This is 10th season for McDavid.

    Won First Cup:

    Mario Lemieux: 7th season

    Joe Sakic: 8th season

    Nathan MacKinnon: 9th season

    Mike Modano: 10th

    Steven Stamkos: 12th

    Alex Ovechkin: 13th

    Steve Yzerman: 14th season

    Ray Bourque: 22nd season

And, soon to be added to the list:

    Kirill Kaprizov: 5'th season...

Kaprizov much more likely to win in his 6th, 7th, or 8th season, assuming he stays with the Wild. Kaprizov also started later than some of those guys.
