It was bound to happen. With Minnesota Wild general manager also taking the head executive role for Team USA's upcoming 4 Nation Face-Off tournament next year, his very own head coach in St. Paul, John Hynes, has been named as an assistant coach.
In case you live a normal life and don't know what the 4 Nations Face-Off is (because we sort of forgot about it as well), it is the NHL's own answer to not having a best-on-best international tournament in a very long time. Because of a disagreement between the Olympics and the NHL, it has been over a decade since we have last seen the best players in the world go head-to-head representing their country.
So, even though it looks like the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics will have NHL players, Gary Bettman has decided to do this miniature tournament in February 2025 that features just Canada, United States, Sweden, and Finland. The entire tournament will be split between Montreal and Boston hosting over an eight-day period.
