  • Jesper Wallstedt Is On Top Of The World

    That's Wild

Jesper Wallstedt can do no wrong right now. Just hours after the Minnesota Wild netminder was named Rookie of the Month for November, he went ahead and earned an gutsy 1-0 shutout win over Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers. There is really nothing stopping him from being a dominant force in between the pipes and one of the better goaltenders in the league for the rest of the season. It's something beautiful to behold and it's happening for the Wild.

And it's not even just the accolade and then the result. Wallstedt is making history.

According to NHL PR, Wallstedt recording his fourth shutout this season is the second-fastest to do it in league history. Not just among rookies or any other qualifier, we're talking about the entire history of the NHL and Jesper Wallstedt needing just 15 games to record four shutouts is the fastest ever since Frank "Mr. Zero" Brimsek did it in the year 1938. No one has been able to earn four shutouts in fewer games in the last 86 years.

    He's nuts.

    • More on the Wild being able to earn a 1-0 win over the Oilers thanks to Wallstedt and Jonas Brodin scoring a goal. [Pioneer Press]
    • On captain Jared Spurgeon turning back the clock and looking like his old self during this hot streak. [The Athletic]
    • While Wallstedt shutting the door is great, the Wild squeaking out these close wins because of their elite goaltending is not a recipe for much success. The offense will need to get a whole lot better to continue this streak. [Hockey Wilderness]

    Off the trail...

    • Uh oh. Stars' Tyler Seguin helped off the ice after an awkward collision. [TheScore]
    • Who are some players that you should probably drop from your fantasy lineups? [ESPN]
    • Jordan Binnington went Jordan Binnington Mode and decided to chirp at his head coach Jim Montgomery after being pulled. Apparently they're all good now though, but man is that goalie something else. [NHL.com]

Just keep winning.  Some team will fall off and a top end trade offer may come.

I listened to Worst Seats yesterday, and Russo and Lapanta both agreed that going after a Sherwood would only do so much.  "You only have so many assets and trades you can do.  Guerin needs to wait for a big offer to come along."

From NHL.com's article on The Wall's fast start, some comparables for perspective:

    # of games to five shuouts, start of career:

    Dominik Hasek:  73 games

    Martin Brodeur:  80 games

    Patrick Roy:  134 games

Crazy thought:  If Wallstedt keeps playing lights out (or even close to it) for another month, is Gus no longer the goalie from the Wild on the Swedish Olympic team?

Could simply be both. Ullmark and Ersson were both in the 4 Nations tourney, but both are below an .880 save percentage so far this NHL season. Markstrom was in consideration for 4 Nations, but also below .880 this season.

What if The Wall is actually this great and ends the season with a dozen or so no no’s. And then repeats it for a decade or so….

Idk, I guess that would be pretty spectacular. I was watching another teams broadcast and their play by play guy compared him to Henrik Lundqvist.

Wally leading the NHL in many categories. He is pushing/challenging Gus which is good for Gus IMO.

This is great and Brackett/Guerin picks are traded for Hughes which should be good and eliminate much debate about the Ogie, Rossi, Booey futures. I think they'll be good players, but I'm psyched about the ones MN has in Yurov and Wally.

Wally appears to have the mentality and attitude to be a top goalie. I don't think he gets enough recognition. He's been great, hope he can keep it up and show the consistency to prove it's the real deal.
