    That's Wild

Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin spoke with NHL.com in a quick little Q&A and Kirill Kaprizov's new contract came up. While he can sign the player as soon as July 1, 2025 to a contract extension, talks could be had beforehand -- but, Guerin is not going to be doing that anytime soon.

    Quote

You can talk to Kaprizov about a new contract as soon as July 1. I know that's pretty far off, but do you approach any of your business this season with an eye on what his salary could possibly be?

"No. We're a long way away from that. We're just focusing on the season. We just want to play. Kirill just wants to play hockey. We just want to play hockey. We'll figure all that out later."

You can read more answers from Guerin here: [NHL.com]

    • After getting recalled for a look in NHL practices, Mikey Milne was sent back down to AHL Iowa. [The Hockey News]

    Off the trail...

    • Flyers defenseman Cam York appears to be almost ready to return to action — could possibly be back in the lineup on Thursday against the Ottawa Senators — so now decision time is looming for what the Flyers should do with Emil Andrae. The young defenseman has looked more than the part and has possibly been the team’s best blueliner in York’s absence, but the numbers and waiver exemption might play a part. [PHLY]

    • Award hype season is already starting and one Flyer in particular is towards the top of the Calder race (oh boy, I wonder who). ESPN put out their recent “NHL Awards Watch” going trophy-by-trophy to see who should be told they did great this year. [ESPN]
    • It’s also Hockey Hall of Fame Week and the 2024 class is one for the history books, but what about 2025? There are some big names who could make it. [Daily Faceoff]

Guerin's final grade will depend on whether or not 97 re-signs, period.  I don't care how this group does during regular season, or playoffs this year.  If the team flames out the second half of this season, but 97 re-signs in off-season, Guerin get's an A.  If 97 doesn't re-sign Guerin gets promoted to NHL hockey fan (fired).  Your move hot shot.

He can't sign until July anyway.  The only thing he'd potentially get out of it would be a definitive NO and then try to pry more out of a trade given he'd have an extra year.

No sense distracting the day to day

It's also possible that Guerin does everything right and Kaprizov still leaves.  Maybe his girlfriend wants to live in California or something and we won't be able to convince him to stay no matter what we do.  Situations can be more complex than what you or I see.  Things are rarely that black and white.

My approach removes all that pesky subjectivity.  Keeps it simple for my small brain.

I am pretty sure KK has a NMC so trading would be tricky also.

How far into May do you think this team can go? Bottom line is I think Shooter will have the whole month of June to negotiate a deal. Let Kaprizov do Kaprizov things for now, and maybe you give the agent a call around April for feelers, like, making an appointment to negotiate in St. Paul sometime in June.

Playing devil's advocate here (because I think he will resign), but if he doesn't, wouldn't the offseason be the better time to trade him? You get to find out what team(s) he wants to go to and everyone can make cap things work. I would imagine that you could work out some things for this draft too.

You would also avoid the "get injured/can't trade" scenario.  Unlikely, but I believe that happened to Gaborik.

Keep Logan Stanley away from Kap for another year.
