Wilderness Walk: Wild get former 5th rounder in trade with the Leafs

On Thursday, Minnesota Wild General Manager Paul Fenton announced the team has acquired the rights to defenseman Fedor Gordeev from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a conditional seventh round selection in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The seventh round selection was obtained by the Wild on the NHL Trade Deadline (2019) from the Winnipeg Jets for Matt Hendricks.

Gordeev, a Toronto native was drafted by his hometown team in 2017, 141st overall. The left-handed defenseman stands six-foot-seven and weighs 224 pounds. Although his height is key to his game, Gordeev’s skating and skill aren’t lacking. Gordeev put up 7 goals and 32 points in his third full season in the OHL, splitting his year between the Flint Firebirds, where he served as an assistant captain, and the Guelph Storm after being traded. Storm coach George Burnett had this to say about Gordeev, “He’s not fun to play against when he’s on his game and he’s able to play against highly skilled players because of his reach and his skating ability and his mobility for a guy that’s that big. There’s some special qualities there.”

After being traded to Guelph, Gordeev put up 13 points in 31 games for the Storm and improved to a plus-21.
