  • Wilderness Walk: Icy Cold Takes Edition

Sometimes being in the prediction business is tough. As you hopefully know, I, Jim Dowd’s Pants the First, write the Previews for almost all of the Wild’s games throughout the season here at Hockey Wilderness. That means I have to predict things. Sometimes I’m right about a bunch of things in a row and feel like a hockey genius, and other times I’m dead wrong. After last night’s contest in Detroit, Minnesota clearly has some kinks to work out, and so does my hot take machine, which seems to be on the fritz just one day into the season. Great!

Let’s review some of my icy cold takes.

Cold Take Number 1: As stated in yesterday’s Preview, the third line of Joel Eriksson Ek with Marcus Foligno and Chris Stewart would be a stinker, because Stewart had a bad Training Camp and Eriksson Ek needs talent around him. Eriksson Ek scored the Wild’s first goal of the season on a beautiful feed from Stewart. Then Stewart scored a nice goal from down low just seconds later.

Cold Take Number 2: Also from the Preview, there would be an electric atmosphere in Detroit with the opening of the new Little Caesars Arena. The brand new venue, hosting its first regular season game, was quiet for a lot of the night, and from my viewpoint in the JDP Press Box (my couch), there seemed to be a LOT of empty seats in the lower bowl. Were people just out exploring for the entire game, or what?

Cold Take Number 3: From MANY stories over the summer, the Wild really missed out by not signing Antti Niemi to be its backup goaltender. Niemi gave up four goals on thirteen shots and was yanked from his Penguins debut after nine minutes last night in Chicago. Pittsburgh would go on to lose 10-1.

Oops! Can’t win ’em all! I’ll get my game together soon, and so will the Wild!

Because it has to start somewhere and it has to start sometime, here is Rage Against the Machine to take us through today’s Walk.
