  • Wilderness Walk: Can’t Win ’Em All Edition

    Time to de-mump, you guys!

With a couple days off on the way for the Wild, the team will lick its wounds, let the dust settle on one of the craziest weeks in franchise history, and hopefully get its full lineup back before Sunday’s game against the San Jose Sharks.

If you play enough games, you’re going to run into a couple hot goalies, and you simply cannot win every single game. That’s the explanation for last night’s loss... it’s basically just the law of averages. Now that we’ve gotten used to the Wild almost never losing, it’s extra hard to see the team fall, on the rare occasion that it isn’t able to overcome whatever small deficit it has found itself in.

Last night’s loss was particularly frustrating, especially since the Wild scored the game’s first goal, but had it disallowed because the puck was technically kicked toward the goal, even though Erik Haula clearly had no intent of kicking the puck directly toward the net. There are certain games, though, where you just know that the only way to beat the other team’s goalie is to get a lucky bounce that fools him, and the only lucky bounce the Wild got last night was on that disallowed goal. So, I guess that wasn’t a lucky bounce at all in the end.

It’s also a bummer of a loss for Devan Dubnyk, who definitely played well enough to deserve a win, but... again... law of averages.

The silver lining is that the Wild played a good defensively structured game. It allowed plenty of shots, but minimized the danger of the chances against by keeping shots on the perimeter and allowing Dubnyk to make the saves. Additionally, while it didn’t earn the win last night, the team still manages to compete in every game, regardless of the outcome. There are simply no nights off for this team, and that is a huge factor in the team being successful far more often than it fails. I guess it’s also worth mentioning that Ryan Suter returned to the lineup after getting clobbered into the boards on Tuesday.

After a week of flux and uncertainty for the Wild organization, REO Speedwagon has some great words of wisdom to take you through today’s Walk.
