Their There were some epic battles back before somebody decided to move hockey to where their there is no ice. Occasionally before they fought, they would play a little of the game, but a pre-game scuffle or two had been known to break out. A bench clearing brawl was also not beyond the realm of probability when those teams faced off, one such occasion bringing us broadcasting gold out of Tom Reid when he said "Well even the players have left the penalty box, which is definitely against the rules."
Maybe I'm sappy and sentimental for the hockey I watched as a kid. Growing up just 15 minutes from the old Met Center had its perks back in those days (as well as having parents who had a decent understanding of the game). It's an old style of hockey that you would be hard pressed to find floating around the NHL these days. If you need to find any inspiration on this, just look up Dino Ciccarelli and Al Secord.
