Wild trade with Sabres leads to sharp reaction around the league, and social media

I’m not sure who’s saying it. It kind of sounds like everybody but, sometimes nobody at the same time. While the twitter world exploded over the Minnesota Wild trading away Marco Scandella and Jason Pominville to the Buffalo Sabres, some sat back and just soaked it up. In return, the Wild received Tyler Ennis and Marcus Foligno. The deal does clear some cap space depending on what the Wild decide to do with Foligno who becomes a RFA in under 24 hours. It sounds like he’ll be signed, but at what salary?

Checking in around the team, Ennis just happened to be working out with old buddy, old pale Jared Spurgeon when the news came down that the childhood friends would be reunited in ’just’OK’ new home green jerseys with the Wild this fall.

Reaction was swift, if not somewhat unnerving coming out of Buffalo today. It seems as though everyone thinks it’s a good deal, if not leaning slightly towards a win for whomever you root for.

Cameras caught up with Wild Head Coach Bruce Boudreau, and he seems to be excited for adding some much needed size on his roster.

Minnesota Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher said that he had been chasing Foligno for a couple seasons now. I’m sure he’s had plenty of opportunity to pull the trigger before and get Foligno, just this time it doesn’t cost him as much money. He’s going to have to pay him something though.

Wow....

That is one super long sentence Mr. Fletcher.

Of course there was more reaction on twitter as everyone remembered that totes adorbs picture of Spurgeon and Ennis as very fashionable adolescents.

Of course the dream of theirs together was to grow up and not have to play for the Oilers and be on the same team in the NHL.

I bet it is a neat story Tyler Ennis. I bet it is...

Of course, some Minnesota Wild fans took it worse than others. While it’s easy to see the value in giving yourself some cap space, others are quite upset by the trade.

It is no big surprise that this team wasn’t coming back this fall fully intact. With expansion and salary cap constraints, the Wild are not really in a position to be picky. The cap crunch was weighing on Fletcher, and he did what he needed to do in order to get the rest settled.

Trades and expansion have now cost the Wild Pominville and Scandella along with Erik Haula and Alex Tuch who were both lost to the Vegas Golden Knights. Not a good week for anyone who’s a super big fan of the role players on their favorite hockey team. It’s like getting punched in the face repeatedly, and each time you squint your eyes open all you can see is that one image of Justin Bieber.

The twittersphere resembled something akin to scorched earth meets a crappy Ben Stiller movie. We’re talking Meet the Fockers bad.

Not a pretty day on Twitter when Bo Jackson is getting a mention. I think only Bo knows how far back that reference goes.

In the end, it’s not necessarily a good or a bad thing. Fans in Buffalo are super pumped to be getting a solid defensive guy and they get to bring home a long time fan favorite. Wild get cap space, and a couple pieces they hope will work out but they probably aren’t holding their breath on these guys either. Maybe they are system guys who thrive with the Boudreau offense.

Free agency is just a few hours away. What will the Wild do with all their new-found fortunes?
