  • Wild signs WCHA Player of the Year Petan to Amateur Tryout

    Guest

Michigan Tech University's Captain Alex Petan has chosen to sign with the Minnesota Wild Wednesday afternoon. Named the WCHA's Player of the Year, Petan scored 33 points in 36 games in his senior season with the Huskies from Houghton. The Delta, BC native helped lead his team to a 23-9-5 record on its way to a WCHA regular season championship title.

Throughout his four year career at MTU, he averaged three shots per game, has 15 game-winning goals, 21 power play goals, and total of 135 points in 153 games played. Alex's younger brother Nicolas is a prospect of the Winnipeg Jets.

The 23, almost 24 year old, sports and fitness management major, is listed at 5'9", 180 pounds by Michigan Tech. Petan scored a highlight reel goal that made SportCenter's Top 10 against Michael Shibrowski and the Minnesota Golden Gophers in 2012.

Michigan Tech's season came to an end when they lost a 1-0 game to eventual WCHA Final Five champion Ferris St. The final PairWise Rankings and RPI had the Huskies ranked 16th in the country, though they had the 8th best win percentage in the NCAA. In a recent article with The Globe and Mail, Huskies head coach had this to say about his senior co-captain:
