It’s official. We will get to see a glimpse of the future of the Minnesota Wild this season.
On Tuesday night, the team announced that they have signed 2019 first-round draft pick Matt Boldy to his three-year, entry-level contract.
Something of interest to note in this announcement: he will start with the AHL affiliate Iowa Wild. This doesn’t mean that we won’t see him with the big club at some point, as turning professional will burn the first year of his contract no matter what. Might as well get some NHL experience to make it worth it.
There are also cap considerations to take into account. According to CapFriendly.com, the Wild have just $760,437 in cap space at the moment, but since cap accumulates daily, they will be able to slot him in without significant movement.
The contract will reportedly carry a $925,000 AAV with no bonuses (unconfirmed as of yet), there will no doubt be some shuffling on the roster.
Boldy shined at the World Junior Championships for the United States with five goals and seven points in seven games. His final season with Boston College ended in disappointment, but he did finish with 11 goals and 31 points in 22 games.
