  • Wild place Mikko Koivu on IR, recall Greg Pateryn and Nico Sturm from AHL

    Guest

Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu suffered an apparent lower-body injury against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. It’s unclear exactly how he was injured, but apparently the ailment is bad enough to keep him out of action for a little while. The Wild announced Friday that the 36-year-old is headed to injured reserve.

To fill in for Koivu as he recovers, the Wild recalled forward Nico Sturm from the Iowa Wild. Sturm has collected six goals and 11 points in 23 games with Minnesota’s AHL affiliate this season.

Losing Koivu certainly isn’t the best news for the Wild. The veteran remains one of the better two-way centers in hockey, and not having him in the lineup certainly won’t do Minnesota any favors. The Wild did look pretty solid without Koivu in the lineup against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, though, which is encouraging.

The Wild also announced that defenseman Greg Pateryn has been recalled from the AHL. Pateryn was sent to Iowa for a conditioning stint earlier this week. While it’s good to see him back on the roster, he likely will remain out of commission for a little longer, as he has also been placed on IR.

The Wild will be back in action Saturday as they take on the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh.
