  • Wild Acquire Quinn Hughes From Canucks In Shocking Blockbuster Trade

The Minnesota Wild have made the biggest trade in the NHL's modern era. They have acquired world-class defenseman Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks.

Reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman first and then multiple other sources confirmed with more details, the Wild have moved several key pieces for the future to go all-in for at least the next couple of seasons with one of the best defensemen the world has seen in this century.

To bring Hughes to St. Paul, the Wild reportedly sent top rookie defenseman Zeev Buium, center Marco Rossi, young winger Liam Ohgren, and the 2026 first-round pick to the Canucks.

Essentially, the Wild took a large chunk out of their future to commit themselves to this current team. Rossi is the oldest of the bunch at a ripe 24 years old and would've been top-of-the-lineup building blocks for the Wild, but have now been shipped to Vancouver to get one of the best talents the NHL has ever seen available via trade.

But that's just focusing on what the Wild gave up.

Quinn Hughes is, obviously, one of the best players in the world. Without him, the Canucks would be finishing at the bottom of the league for multiple years in a row and he instantly transforms any single team he is on into one that matters.

The only downside of the Wild getting Hughes is his contract situation.

The 26-year-old world-class blueliner is set to hit free agency in the summer of 2027 and unless general manager Bill Guerin and the Wild can convince Hughes that he actually doesn't want to go and play with his brothers in New Jersey and re-sign in Minnesota, the Wild will be getting a whole two playoff runs.

It is a trade that is going to affect both organizations for decades to come and now the Wild have put a very small and ticking timer on their team to see if they can really make some more noise than they ever have in franchise history. It certainly is a whole lot easier with Quinn Hughes on your team compared to not.

In 459 career NHL games, Hughes has scored 61 goals and 432 points while averaging 24:32 TOI.

Wow! You have to think Guerin has already talked extension or this is a huge mistake (might be anyway). Still processing this one and not sure what to think! Bummed to lose Zeev especially.

Did the owner give Billy an ultimatum? Holy crap!

I was thinking that too. He felt he had to make a huge move or he’s toast

Apparently we don't like even-year first round draft picks because we just essentially traded four of them to Vancouver:

    2020 1st: Rossi

    2022 1st: Ohgren

    2024 1st: Zeev

    2026 1st: TBD

Is Hughes worth FOUR first round picks? I sure hope so.

Does this mean more of the Hughes family is headed here eventually? Maybe, but not likely to happen anytime soon. Jack is signed through 2030 and Luke through 2032.  Really hoping this works out. If nothing else, it makes us a better team now. I'm a little leery about how this works out long term. One of the biggest concerns about Rossi always seemed to be his size. But Quinn Hughes is 5'10" and 180 lbs. and at 26, likely isn't going to get much bigger. Cautiously excited to see how this all plays out, but if Hughes isn't re-signed, this becomes the Herschel Walker trade all over again.

Shocked to see a trade. I can't disagree though with the idea to go with as much skill and star power as you can. The future is always just potential, and the Wild have near top end talent in Kaprizov, Hughs and Boldy right now. JEE is not far behind. Sad to see the boys go to Vancouver but excited for Hughes to jump in

Well all boils down to evolution of Zeev .

Canucks get Rossi for FREE , Ohgren and 2026 Draft are still a ?

    Yeah, not sure about this.

Rossi, Buium, Ohgren, and a 1st is quite a lot.  I get that elite players are not easily pried from teams, so I can accept paying a lot to get a really good player, but I think it's a huge mistake unless he is going to sign an extension next year.

A season and a half of Hughes is not enough to replace losing Rossi and Buium long-term.  They are both good players that will keep getting better.  Ohgren I'm not going to lose sleep over.  I think he will get better too, but I'm feeling like a solid 3rd line player is probably his ceiling.  The 1st isn't a huge loss if we do well this year, but it hurts a bit on top of the draft picks given up for Jiricek (not that I disagree with that trade, but I am a little concerned about paying that much for a project that requires a lot of development when Bombardir and co. have been pretty crap at developing anyone in the Wild's System as a whole).

I also have concerns about team chemistry when the Wild rely so heavily on it for their defense to work well.  A change of this magnitude isn't something that should be done lightly.  I get that Rossi has been hurt, Buium is still working his way in as a regular, and Ohgren has primarily been filler in a roster with a bunch of injuries, but it's still a huge change that has to affect that entire locker room.

I just really doubt Hughes stays, and if we have to shop Hughes in a year to avoid losing all that for nothing, then that will be the turning point where I will start thinking Guerin needs to go.  We don't know if Guerin has a verbal commitment from Hughes for the Wild to have a realistic chance to re-sign him.  Maybe he's on board if the Wild can make a run in the playoffs.  I feel like it would hinge on that at the very least.

Wow. We absolutely emptied the cupboards on this one. What other pieces do we have? Jiricek?

Guess we're stuck with the forwards we have. This move is a real head scratcher. We need a couple more goal scorers, I don't see that happening now, especially with free agency being what it is.

    What happened

The big swing we were hoping the Wild would take. How happy do you think Kappy is right now!! I know I am. 2025-26 just became a “Wild enter the Conversation” moment. Let’s go!

Billy is an idiot. Hughes is awesome, but not worth what was given. They now have two years to win the cup. Hughes won’t sign here, has already said he’s going to NJ. Billy will lose his job over this when he doesn’t re-sign. He just gutted the Wild who were already lacking depth. He literally just traded the entire youth of this team. SMH.

What do you suppose Dallas (and to a lesser extent Colorado) are thinking now?  If Hughes meshes well with the Wild, the Central just got a lot tougher than it already was.

Keep all the Rossi-baters in your prayers, boys. They’re playing Sarah McLachlan on repeat tonight. 🤣

Where’d you come from nim rod? Guess you’re too smooth brained to realize we lost a really good center when we’re short on centers.

Makes me wonder what the Devils offers were Quinn him.

Doesn’t matter if they know he’s signing in 2027 or whenever his contract ends.

I wonder if theres any nepotism rules that would prevent 3 brothers from playing for the same team ive seen many brothers of 2 play for the same team but i dont remember ever seeing more than 2 at the same time as that could create a mini union on a team
