Let me start off by letting you know that if you think this article is strictly about recreating some sort of on-ice magic that the Edmonton Oilers have, you are sorely mistaken. It is about something even more important.
Here’s a little backstory for those who aren’t as chronically online:
Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl light it up on the ice and are also best friends off it. Coincidentally, their wives, Lauren Kyle McDavid and Celeste Desjardens, are also best friends. This has formed what a section of hockey Twitter calls “The Edmonton Polycule.” The idea of the four of them being in some sort of four-way romantic relationship has been entertaining for some of the masses, especially when the offseason content is running low.
However, this year, the Edmonton Polycule provided us with plenty to discuss. Connor and Lauren were married last summer, and this summer, it was Leon and Celeste’s turn. In a wedding that seemed to last for almost a week, the hockey royalty celebrated the new couple. But imagine the surprise when the McDavids climbed onto the plane with the Draisaitls and are spending their honeymoon with them.
Or, I’m sorry, it’s been dubbed a “friendmoon.”
Might this be a secret to Edmonton’s success in the past few years? Having McJesus leading your team is a big factor, but perhaps fostering these sorts of relationships off the ice could help with the culture even more.
There are already two duos on the Minnesota Wild who easily fall into this dynamic. However, their significant others aren’t quite at the level of social media stars as Lauren and Celeste.
Jared Spurgeon and Jake Middleton
These defensemen are a Mutt and Jeff situation with Short Spurgeon and Massive Middleton. Jared is the quiet leader, seemingly always calm. While he likes to have fun, he’s usually more on the sidelines when we see him. Jake is boisterous and in the middle of everything, loudly proclaiming that he’s naked under his breezers and that Kirill’s goal was a Top Titty 2x4.
Spurgeon and Middleton are not shy about their love for each other. We already know they spend plenty of time together off the ice, often spending holidays and the All-Star break together. And thanks to Jared’s amazing wife Danielle, we have several pictures that prove their love for each other. Middleton was even featured in Danielle’s wedding anniversary post back in 2023.
This season, the two couples, along with Matt Boldy and a rotating cast of other Wild players, formed a group that frequented local escape rooms. It was nice of them to let Boldy third wheel, honestly.
The only problem with this potential polycule is that these two couples are already married. But, if they decided to have a second wedding, they could take each other along on a friendmoon and nobody would think it was weird.
Matt Boldy and Brock Faber
Speaking of Boldy, he and Faber have become a sort of black cat/golden retriever duo in the best way possible. While Boldy has a permanent resting bitch face, Faber is usually rolling around on the floor with the team dog while grinning ear to ear.
Opposites attract, you know?
These two quickly bonded once Faber stepped into the NHL straight from the NCAA. Boldy was completing his first full season as a rookie when Faber played his first NHL game, and they’ve been almost inseparable since.
Faber may be indirectly responsible for Boldy living in Minnesota over the offseason. While the Wild had a few summers where most of the young guns stuck around, Boldy has been quietly dating a girl from Minnesota that he may have met through Faber and his long-time girlfriend. And while the girls are not as prolifically online as McDavid or Draisaitl’s wives, they do post about spending time together consistently.
Neither of these couples is even engaged, but if and when they decide to get married, it would not be a surprise to see them have a friendmoon. Mostly because Brock would be heartbroken to know that he wasn’t allowed along, and Matt would never put him through that torment.
Anyone else?
It wouldn’t be a surprise for most of the Wild players to take a Friendmoon together because their locker room is just so tightly knit. This would even extend this to players who left in the last few seasons, like Matt Dumba, Brandon Duhaime, and Pat Maroon.
The Wild players have notoriously vacationed together and spent the off-seasons having tons of fun with each other. As much as some fans like to belittle the importance of a good locker room culture, bonding off the ice can lead to the all-important chemistry on the ice.
