  • The Student Section: Regular Season Episode #4

Good Morning Wilderness! It was another amazing weekend of college hockey. Let's get right to it.

    Gophers vs. Huskies

First, I have to give credit to the St. Cloud State Huskies. The Huskies impressed me with their play this weekend. While the Huskies only have a (3-3-0, .500) record, they have played one of the toughest schedules in the country.

On Saturday night, the Gophers were better team, but still needed 4-3 overtime win to salvage a split with the pesky Huskies at Mariucci Arena. Sophomore forward Justin Kloos had a career game and scored the game-winning goal at 1:19 of overtime to ice the game for the Gophers. Kloos paced the Gophers with the hat trick, the first of his college career.

Before Saturday's game, Kloos predicted that he was going to score two goals. Kloos was able to back up that claim and add to it.

    Bulldogs vs. RedHawks

Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Part II: The University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs continued their Friday night woes. True to form, the Bulldogs lost for the fourth straight Friday night as the Miami University RedHawks snuck out of Amsoil arena with a 3-2 victory.

Not helping their cause, the Bulldogs took two ill-advised penalties at the end of the game that ended up costing Duluth on the scoreboard.

Incidentally, the Bulldogs are the most penalized team in division I hockey. The Bulldogs are averaging a hefty 22.8 penalty minutes a game.

According to the UMD play-by-play announcer Bruce Ciskie, the Dogs were the victim of some questionable officiating.

Following the season script, on Saturday night, the Bulldogs would come back and beat the Redhawks 4-3 to remain perfect on Saturday nights. The Bulldogs would get four goals from four different players. Freshman defenseman Willie Raskob scored the game-winning goal for the Bulldogs.

    UND vs. Air Force

In the USA Hockey Hall of Fame game, the University of North Dakota forward Drake Caggiula would score the game-tying goal with .29 seconds left in regulation.

UND would go to overtime and junior forward Bryn Chyzyk would score shorthanded with 6.6 seconds left in the game to win it for UND.

That’s not a misprint. Forward Brendan O'Donnell was assessed a 5-minute major and game misconduct for checking from behind at 2:17 mark of overtime.

Finally, from the fancy stat department, UND is tied with Minnesota-Duluth for first in the nation in shorthanded goals with five.

    Beavers vs. Nanooks

The Bemidji State Beavers completed the sweep of the visiting University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, MN. Junior forward Cory Ward scored at 2.03 of over time to lead the Beavers past the Nanooks.

The Beavers blew out the Nanooks 6-1 on Friday night. Sophomore forward Charlie O'Connor paced the Beavers with two goals. Freshman goalie Michael Bitzer was stellar in net stopping 25-of-26 shots to improve to 2-1-0 on the season.
