  • The Dallas Stars Just Upped the Ante For the Wild's "Christmas Morning"

If you're a Minnesota Wild fan sick of the team being handcuffed by their salary cap situation, don't worry, you're not alone. After a trade deadline where the Wild were active but without much impact, general manager Bill Guerin sounded exhausted by the last four years of Cap Hell.

"We couldn't do anything else," Guerin said at his press conference on Friday, explaining the Wild's moves. "I would have loved to be more involved today. But it's not our time to do that. We'll have our time. And you guys just have to wait."

To be clear, "you guys" referred to the media, which Guerin appeared frustrated with. But we -- the fans, the media, and the front office -- are all in a state of waiting. We're all tired of seeing this team have to wait, bide their time, and run out the clock for the Zach Parise and Ryan Suter buyout scourges to fade.

That's why, when Wild owner Craig Leipold talked about next summer at the beginning of the season, he referred to it as "Christmas Morning." However, if you look around the Central Division, it sure seems Christmas came early.

The Colorado Avalanche had to offload Casey Mittelstadt... and another big piece we'll get back to in a bit... but they acquired Martin Necas, Charlie Coyle, and one of the Wild's major rumored trade/free-agent targets in Brock Nelson. They paid a price in sending top prospect Calum Ritchie to the New York Islanders, a prospect equivalent to Minnesota's Danila Yurov, according to The Athletic's Scott Wheeler. But are they a much more playoff-ready team today than last week?

    Absolutely.

Still, we know what's coming -- Christmas Morning came for the Dallas Stars early. They basically stole Mikko Rantanen from the Avalanche, with the Carolina Hurricanes being an unintentional middleman. The move solidified Dallas' status as the favorite to come out of the Western Conference. Even better, they inked Rantanen to a bargain eight-year, $96 million ($12M AAV) contract.

Again, Dallas paid a price. Logan Stankoven has been snakebitten this season, but if his expected goals (16.9) were more closely aligned with his actual goals (nine), we'd be looking at a 21-year-old with 37 points in 59 games despite logging 15 minutes a game. The two first-round picks they parted with will be, at worst, in the mid-20s, but that's still significant draft capital.

But is it worth it to lock in Rantanen for a playoff run and eight extra years?

    Are you even asking?

Rantanen's 27 goals and 70 points in 62 games don't show it, but he's had a down year in terms of overall impact. Particularly, his power play game is uncharacteristically poor... though it says something that he's still tied for 13th in scoring. Even so, since the 2020-21 season, Rantanen has produced 25.0 Standings Points Above Replacement, according to Evolving-Hockey, which is also tied for 13th in the league.

Tied with Kirill Kaprizov, to put a fine point on it.

If you're the Wild and planning for "Christmas Morning," how are you going to compete with that? Part of that fabled day will be (hopefully) locking Kaprizov into a long-term extension. But Dallas just added a top-15, Kaprizov-type player. Dallas preemptively raised the stakes.

Look at the two major free-agent targets that most frequently get tied to the Wild: Nelson and Brock Boeser. Let's keep using the last half-decade as our measuring stick. Nelson's been worth 14.1 SPAR since 2020-21, which puts him tied for 81st in the NHL. Boeser is at 8.1 SPAR during that time, which has him tied for 200th.

Don't get us wrong -- adding a top-100 and top-200 player in the NHL isn't nothing. Still, the gap between a top-15 player and a top-80 player is extremely significant. Just do the math: Nelson and Boeser's combined SPAR don't quite add up to Rantanen's impact over that time. And that's if the Wild were able to get both players in the fold.

So, how can the Wild make a "Christmas Morning" splash that can keep up with Dallas and Rantanen? Mitch Marner (29.4 SPAR since 2020-21; fifth in the NHL) is the only UFA in that Rantanen tier and doesn't have the Minnesota-area connections most Wild free agents tend to have. Beyond that, Nikolaj Ehlers and John Tavares are closer to Nelson's level than a top-15 player.

It will be difficult because it's rare for the NHL's best players to move around. You have to strike when a Matthew Tkachuk or a Rantanen becomes available. The Wild were financially unable to take advantage of the Star Player On the Move Sweepstakes this time around. That couldn't be helped, but now? They have to make sure they're ready for the next time. If they settle for less than an elite player, Minnesota may be doomed to live in Dallas and Rantanen's shadow.

No matter what I say you won’t give the young guys credit. it goes both ways....you seem to be trying to use stats to paint a better picture of the state of wild. yes stat wise we seem to be very similar to colorado, but deeper analysis (with more emphasis on actual play) would tell a different story. colorado is getting better and is ready for the playoffs. we are stumbling to the finish, and based on our recent activity, are just happy to make it there, with likely a gentleman sweep as the best case scenario. that's nothing to be proud of.

10 years of NO playoff success. and we still give credit for trying.....i doubt kap has the patience of most wild fans 😞

Yes, we are stumbling without 3 of our top 6 players.  Stats are saying what the team has been the entire time,  not just the last 6 games.

Hopefully we get healthy for the last two weeks and then see what happens.  I hope it isn’t like two years ago when Kap came back for two before the playoffs.  I do not believe he was close to 100 percent for that playoff series.

we'll see how it goes.....i think there needs to be a big game by the young trio (Faber, Boldy and Rossi). we need one - can they deliver against the central big boys....

Boldy and Rossi can't make a difference when every team in the world knows they have to stop a second line. Kaprizov needs to be moved before the franchise can start threading a needle.

I wish they had 30 M, but they have just under 21, bit including Rossi’s next contract.  If they keep everyone they have and sign Rossi and bring in Ohgren and Yurov, they will only have around 8-10M.  Really depends on what Rossi signs for.

Honestly I feel the Wild should trade Kaprizov this summer for any takers willing to overpay. Build up around Boldy, Rossi, Faber, Buuim, and we all have seen  the elite talent level Yurov has. We have a solid D unit for years to come let's flip Kaprizov for some young talent, pick up Marner and another top 6er in free agency. Tuch is a must going forward. I don't see Kaprizov being the answer.

I don't disagree with trading Kaprizov.  However, that only comes if he doesn't sign this offseason.  If he plays the lets wait and see game.  Trade him at the deadline.  With the week FA class and how the money is going to be flowing this summer.  I have a feeling if they shop him at the trade deadline you could get a significant hall if they trade him.

That being said I don't want to trade him. I hope they sign him.

I think it's time to start getting concerned about Kaprizov. There are no reports of him even skating yet at least that I have heard. Either we are not being told something about the severity of the injury or there is trouble in Billy land with resigning him. So much hinges on what he is or is not going to do I would think the two sides have to have at least talked to each other by now.

How does this injury affect his value if he does not sign here and we have to trade him?  All reports are it was a sports hernia. I don't know the difference between a sports hernia and just a hernia you get from lifting a keg of beer but I do know they can be of a wide degree of severity. Maybe there is more to the Wild medical staff not being up to par than we know. Anyone even know where he is right now? Has he been seen around the team? Maybe he is out of country getting treatment. Kaprizov has always had that man of international mystery and intrigue vibe around him. 🤔

So what if we turn out to be the ones over paying for damaged goods? What if he's never the same Kaprizov that came here and we are into him for 14 or 15M? There is a player I can't remember who right now that just returned from sports hernia surgery in just under 5 weeks he's back on the ice.  The Wild are always an interesting team that's for sure.

haven't seen him around 🙂 but good call out

lots of possibilities - i think/hope he'll be fine but this whole situation may allow wild to entice him to stay and for him to agree .... given the uncertainty of the injury and it's implications....and with July date coming up soon.....might be a situation where they have a mutual understanding and realize hey we have unfinished business, or "hey Bill your medical staff sucks, I'm out", or "damn i can't see not playing with Rossi and Boldy the rest of my career, where do i sign?" or "taking a one year discount contract to play with my idol and pass to him on the record breaking goal".....so many scenarios!

It's just been too quiet for too long in regards to any news about him at all. You would think you would at least see him in the press box watching the game or hear that he was in the locker room supporting his teammates.  It's the same radio silence we got from Billy when he had formal complaints filed against him he just disappeared for a couple months and went dark.

That's a great point and some damn good detective work MacGyver.  Conspiracy theorists like this theory.  And with no transparency from bill, that's all we have to go on.  Unless you're still a member of the In Guerin We Trust fan club.  Trenin and Brazzers are the officers in that club.  Oh snap.

i am just grumpy at the whole situation. there was plenty of time to make it a much better 5 year run so that the team was more comfortable with Kap signing

but it reality - we took a step back, done nothing to help Kap where it matters (physicality in top 6) and again we are waiting for prospect promise and saying "next year". Kap is not 20. He won't be on board with another 5 year plan, no matter what Leo and Bill preach.

I get the grumpiness. The problem we had was $15m in dead cap space and paying penalties for 5 years. It's not an excuse, it's reality. This means we had to ice a competitive team (Guerin promised this, probably because of OCL's demands) which would rely on value guys who stayed healthy. This worked the 1st 3 years, and likely due to handshakes got the players who took value deals extensions.

However, these past 2 seasons, they have not stayed healthy. This is a major problem due to having to ice a team that lacked depth. Would it have been better with stiffs like Parise and Suter? Suter could still play, but the cost was a cancer in the locker room.

The reality is, you've got a lot of players who can do 1 thing and can't do multiple things. Guys who are top 6 and physical, unless they are homegrown, you simply can't afford them. Those guys are out of our price range. It also didn't help matters that Judd drafted undersized guys who had skill. Size was not a thing he values on his priority list, and where we were drafting, he likely had to choose between skill or size, but he couldn't have both. He chose skill. I simply disagree with that choice 100% of the time, and that he needed to sprinkle in some size too.

My hope is that both Guerin and Judd have learned lessons here: Don't just go after guys who have 1 attribute, go after guys who can multitask hockey style. Does that mean not filling out the cap this offseason? Yes, if the guy you want just isn't there. We do seriously lack very skilled, large players. Players in the Rantanen class of size and skill who can hurt you many different ways. It's not good enough to just have a bunch of small skill guys around, you also need some guys who can take care of the boards, corners, and front of the net.

Essentially, we're going to have to trade for these guys. Small guys are guys with slight frames, or not stocky guys. Some of the smaller guys could build up their bodies to take the punishment, but within the organization, there is absolutely no emphasis on this point. I don't care so much about height, but they've got to be strong and not get bumped off of pucks. This is where I think Rossi has stood out. I still think he needs more.

This is also where I think Faber has helped himself, he was clearly stronger to start the season. He looks worn down now. For those who look at Spurgeon, please understand that he is the exception to this rule, and what he's been able to do is not normal. Back to Faber, I wouldn't mind sitting him for a couple of games and letting Jiricek draw in.

I like what's coming in the future, but the team also has some void spots that need filling. Shooter has to recognize these flaws and spend wisely. He may need to overspend for what our voids are, mainly because other teams have the same issues. I'd love to see a couple of trades with teams that have these types of prospects but they aren't established yet. Maybe they won't give them up and see the same thing? But, with the 2nd best prospect group, I wonder if quantity would help wrest some of those guys away?

It seems to me that following the logic of the 1st statement, getting back the full top 6 is needed more. What Boldy and Rossi are displaying is that they are the 2nd line, not top line players. Getting top line players like Kaprizov and Ek back, should help them make a difference, wouldn't you say? Moving Kaprizov seems to me like it's counterproductive for the 1st statement.

That would likely be the case without the NMC clause. Hopefully, Kaprizov, should we be forced to go this route, would have 3-5 teams on his list so that we could establish a bidding war. If not, I suspect the return will look more like something Carolina got for Rantanen.

every team has bad contracts, we are not unique. i think suter could and would still be playing for us and being just fine in whatever role, be it 2nd or 3rd pair. Parise is another story - but again - the buy outs focused on ZP and RS only. the money saved fluctuated but the core impact was that we could not reuse the money.

injuries happen - yes we been dealt a blow - but look at Colorado - they've been without their captain for a long time, and Nichy has been out of action almost half of every year and they still are in good spot. they even lost a superstar and yet they are just as ready for PO as anyone else in the league.

all while we are still lining up excuses. and you know what - we'll have more to come once Nyquist and Nelson is signed. GM and fans will continue to cry

"oh if not the burden of these contracts for Trenin, Foligno, Harty, Freddy G, Braz, Nyquist, Nelson, etc" - some of which will undoubtedly be bought out and restart the cycle of excuses yet again - sometimes you need to call it like it is. Billy failed.

How does this compare with last season? I just quoted the top, but all of the stats I'm inquiring about.

When you got to the goalie numbers, one of ODC's arguments has been that Goose is having a Vezina type year. My argument against this has been that sometimes goalies see a beachball, and other times they see a marble. Goose appears to have leveled off from beachball pucks and is probably seeing something like golf balls coming at him. What makes goaltending harder is when you are backed into a corner and have to play mistake free. I think our goalies are at that point.

I don't have the numbers in front of me (heading to work).

However, I can recall a few things.  Better GA, worse PP/PK, And Gus/Fleury are better (both were in 50th-60th range for GAA/SV%).

I have looked at Colorado. Having MacKinnon is a huge upgrade over anything we've got. Same thing with Makar. But they got off to a brutal start mainly due to goaltending.

Colorado is not even close to the team they were at the beginning of the season. They completely rebuilt their goaltending in season. Somehow they had money to do that. They added what they needed for a playoff run, and with the window they've got, they are ready to make a run. They did gut their future, though.

We are not yet at that level and have way too many holes to be considered contenders. I think we're about done with our future picks for awhile, but keeping picks now will allow for them to be traded next season, a season where I expect us to be much better.

Shooter got the guys he promised contracts, market level contracts. He's also got a way out July 1st on many of those. I suggest he's going to need to do some trading out to get us where we need to be. So far, it looks like he merely built an invitation seeking roster, so we'll need tremendous luck to get through a playoff round....but there have been teams that have gone on a role from the 7 & 8 spots before.

I found time to check (I posted this on Reddit, so I found it).

    Last year, 87 points

    20-21st in GF/GA

    10th in PP

    30th in PK

Aside from Kap, everyone in the top 5 was around 60-70 pts

Gus and Fleury ended the year 50-65th ranges in GAA/SV%>

So far, it looks like he merely built an invitation seeking roster, so we'll need tremendous luck to get through a playoff round....but there have been teams that have gone on a role from the 7 & 8 spots before.

having Mac and Makar and Ranty at beginning of the season doesn't invalidate the injuries i mentioned. reading some people it seems that we already have our Makar in Faber and a combo of Rossi/Boldy is enough to offset Mac. 🙂

contending teams around us, not just Avs, are bold and smart, while we are neither.

Colorado is not even close to the team they were at the beginning of the season. They completely rebuilt their goaltending in season. Somehow they had money to do that. They added what they needed for a playoff run, and with the window they've got, they are ready to make a run. They did gut their future, though.

why not? they have Mac and Makar, better Goalie, yes they downgraded from Ranty to Necas, but they picked up vets like Coyle and Nelson for this year's run.

they are also fine for the future - their core is Mac (29) Necas (26) Makar (26) Nichushkin (30) Lehkonen (29) - that is a core in their prime that can run for another 7 years of dominance. i don't think they've gutted their future that much (there will be less top prospects but that can be dealt in the next few years)

you are way too kind to billy here .... facts are that we have no clear plan forward and have not been out of first round in 10 years. still heavily dependent on unknown prospects (who may or may not realize their full potential), our superstar situation is in limbo with Kap and our young trio of Rossi, Faber and Boldy are not making any splashes when given the chance. finally, we are about to dish out a contract or two to Nelson and Nyquist and maybe even Boeser that will drag us into another decade of irrelevancy.....yikes

A week ago, I would have said there was a solid plan forward. Then, in trading out MaRat, I just tossed my hands in the air and see no plan. Breezers might work out and I believe he's a late bloomer, but why are you trading out guys from the '20 draft? I'd really like to know what they didn't like about MaRat.
