  • Sam Bennett Is the Joel Eriksson Ek Contingency Plan

The Minnesota Wild are looking for a center to back up Joel Eriksson Ek. Sam Bennett fits the description of what they need to take the load off Eriksson Ek, so he can stay healthy and contribute offensively throughout the playoffs. Bennett is a proven winner and a playoff performer.

Bennett has 43 points in 61 playoff games played with the Florida Panthers, the kind of secondary scoring the Wild need to make a deeper playoff run. Bennett provides the perfect play style suited for the playoffs.

However, Bennett's regular-season stats aren't impressive. While he's a three-time 20-goal scorer, he isn't the best playmaker, nor does he have an elite shot at being a 30-goal scorer, so his offense is limited. Still, Bennett would be a great middle-six contributor for the Wild.

Danila Yurov is expected to come in and replace Marco Rossi, who the Wild will likely deal this summer. However, he can't play Eriksson Ek's role to play shutdown grinding minutes. Bennett's better suited for that role. The Wild will likely slot Yurov on the second line in a scoring role with Mats Zuccarello

Florida paid Bennett $4.43 million on his previous contract. He’ll expect a raise, but not that much, so not much that he'll be unaffordable. Can Guerin get Bennett to agree to at least $5 to $5.5 million?

The Anaheim Ducks signed Adam Henrique to a $5.83 million contract from 2019-20 to 2023-24, which is a good comparable. Bennett can settle for this role because he'll be playing in all situations, but he will be playing a defensive role at even strength.

Yakov Trenin made a great physical impact against the Vegas Golden Knights in the playoffs. He notched two assists. Trenin even stole the puck from Hill, where he almost assisted Justin Brazeau on a potential empty-net goal, but Brazeau doesn't have the foot speed for playoff hockey.

However, Guerin and head coach John Hynes played Brazeau over Vinnie Hinostroza during the playoffs. Therefore, Guerin is likely looking to extend him to be at least a 12th or 13th forward next season, now that the Wild have the cap space to carry 13 forwards. While Brazeau can still become a reliable fourth-liner, he doesn't play special teams.

Bennett's a faster version of Trenin with more offense. Everyone wants Trenin to have more speed and offense, but he doesn't have that skill level. But Bennett does. If the Wild had Bennett playing against Vegas, they could've likely beaten them. Bennett would've taken the Jack Eichel and Mark Stone matchup. Bennett would have broken them mentally.

Ryan Hartman has shown he can be a playoff performer, and he and Bennett could coax more offense out of Marcus Foligno. Hartman has 11 points in the last 11 playoff games for the Wild. He's becoming this team's version of Blake Coleman and Andrew Shaw; Hartman isn't going anywhere.

Foligno can continue his surge to show the NHL why the Wild extended him. Suddenly, his $4 million contract isn't a burden anymore. While his No-Movement Clause (NMC) still may present an issue for the team to make moves when he's in a scoring slump, Foligno will bring physical consistency. Bennett gives him more fuel for his engine.

The Western Conference isn't ready for this shutdown line, which will strike fear into teams simply by forechecking. There will be a lot of finishing checks, open-ice hits, and net crashing, which will bring fans out of their seats. They are talented enough to score clutch goals off energy bursts.

While Bennett will likely get a no-trade clause in his contract, this contract will be worth keeping. It will give them much-needed secondary scoring, and Bennett will play the crease on the second power play. Players like Yurov and David Jiricek are expected to be on the second power play, and they have someone who has no problem initiating contact to score on rebounds.

Now that the Wild have a shutdown line, Eriksson Ek can focus on scoring and have a more productive season. Matt Boldy took another step in the playoffs, and he'll be ready for a true breakout season. That will take the burden off Kaprizov to dominate since they have a line that can bully top lines.

In adding Bennett, Guerin would frustrate division rivals like the Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, and Winnipeg Jets. The Wild can start next season strong. They have their top and third lines set. Now it's time for them to complete their second line.

I mean, Bennett is probably an upgrade over Nelson, but there's no way in hell he takes $5.5m.

I’m sure GMBG will find a way to overpay.

The Wild already have a Sam Bennett, his name is Ryan Hartman $4M. They are almost clones. Sam has a very slight edge in scoring over his career and is two years younger, but it's so close that Hartman looks like a steal for the same player.

Anyway, it's pretty much a done deal that Brock Nelson will be joining the Wild this summer. He and Billy have been seen together already this spring. He fits the bill perfectly. Old, downslope veteran that Billy can overpay to finish his career in flyover country.

I have no clue if it's actually true, but they supposedly played golf with each other recently. Idk who would start such a meaningless rumor, but it is what it is.

Bill Guerin had a golf outing with Boeser, never heard of one with Nelson. Perhaps, both were done. Either way they are on BG's top most wanted list. It seems, from various reports.

I “think” I saw Brady T, Bennett, BG and ODC out at Logger’s Trail last weekend. Maybe there’s a clue in there somewhere.

Article here suggests a fit (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25194452-surprise-landing-spots-top-2025-nhl-free-agents)

I'd be for Rossi + Faber + Ohgren + 1st for Brady T. as well.   Would give our top 6 a new look.

I like it! And above scenario should work $ wise too as Rossi $ are shipped out.

D will be fine ! Jiri and Zeev and our surplus of fine D prospect studs

ek Kap Tkachuk Bennett Boldy yurov Foligno Harty (Nelson for league min)

no need to play D w that lineup

Now we are talking.  Hopefully Billy has the creativity to get this done if he wants to compete for a cup.  Dallas is going to be hard to beat for years and we need lots of offense.  People need to realize we don’t need Faber.  He is our chip to get a big fish.  We need offense and lots of it and he is our way to get that.

Guerin said he wanted to work on the Forwards in the off season.  79 free agent forwards across all teams.  40 free agents under the age of 30.  15 free agents who made over 2 million dollars last year.  Of those 15, Nico Sturm, Ryan Donato, and Luke Kunin are part of that group.  Sam Bennet comes in at number 8 on this list at 4.425 million a year.

Now lets take into account that 19 other teams have more money to spend than Minnesota does and a good number of those teams have one or two free agents.

Sam Bennet is going to get a significant pay raise this summer and I doubt the Wild will catch on to the fact that contracts will be going up over the next few years and will low ball his offer.  His contract is probably going to be in the 7 million range.

Good news is when next summer roles around the horrible contracts everyone complains about that the Wild have signed over the past few years will look very good as far as pay goes.

I like this trade for Brady.  Also it seems that Vegas is not near as good as we thought so our competitive first round may not have meant much.  Edmonton is outplaying them badly and Dallas looks to be a threat for many years.  We have to get a lot better forwards to compete.  Need big fish and Faber is the chip to get us it.

Brady Tkachuk is so insanely overrated on this board

    Completely, 100% correct.

Personally, I like Bennett, but don't see it happening as will be addressed below. My gut tells me that Rossi will end up in Philly, who I believe have three first round picks in the upcoming draft, and will possibly be trying to unload Tippett and his $6M+ salary and/or Cates, who is an RFA and is one of us (Stillwater?).

About Bennett, he plays in the no income tax state of Florida. His contract in FL puts a lot more money in his pocket than a contract in Minny would (9.85% state income tax).

It will never happen, but the league and the players union should consider having individual team specific salary caps to address the disparity in state income taxes and create more parity in the league. Currently, there are six NHL teams that play in states with no personal income tax (both FL teams, VGK, Nashville, Dallas and Seattle), and four of the six made the playoffs (66%).

There are nine teams that play in states with personal income tax rates between 3% and 5% (both PA teams, Columbus, Carolina, Detroit, the Avs, Utah, the Blues and the Blackhawks) and three of the nine made the playoffs (33%). Finally, there are ten teams between 9% and 13.3% (three CA teams, three NY teams, NJ, the Caps, Boston and the Wild) and 4 of those 10 advanced (40%).

I don't know how the seven Canadian team's players are taxed federally or provincially, and I don't know how foreign income works between the U.S. and Canada. However, five of the seven Canadian teams made the playoffs (71%).

Personal state income tax rates do have an influence on where professional athletes choose to play when given a choice. Combine the winter weather in FL, NV and TX (and formerly in my winter haven of AZ) with the tax situation in those states and, in reality, they probably have an unfair advantage.

I don't think it will ever happen, but a $90M cap for Vegas and a $98.5M cap for the Wild next season, for example, would level the playing field and provide more parity in the league and to the percentage of salary that players pocket after taxes.

Not exactly true on the tax thing...opposing players when they come to play in Minnesota need to pay our state income tax for that game check.  So really for those players who are in non taxed states only have 41 game checks (home games) that are not taxed.  Excluding the states where they play road games with no state tax.

    Its really complicated.

Do you know what happens when American teams play in Canada and vice versa? How are Canadian federal and provincial taxes? Do they convert USD contracts in Canadian currency and take a haircut on exchange rates? Just curious. Thank you.
