  • NHL Rules that should be brought back: Full 2 Minutes for Minor Penalties

    Guest

    Hello again, Wilderness!

Today, I'm going to give you guys my thoughts on why the NHL should bring back their rule that allows for a full 2-minute power-plays.

Before diving into any of this, I want to first explain the current rule for a 2-minute minor penalty.

Ok, so this seems ok, right? Well, what the team that has the man advantage?

Simply put, if they score on their power-play, the penalty is over.

Some of you may think this is fine and dandy, but I don't think it makes all that much sense.

Why, you may ask? If a team goes on the power-play because of a penalty drawn by the opposing team, they deserve to have the full 2-minutes of the power play. It shouldn't just end just because they scored a goal.

I know some of you are probably thinking now: "Whoa! Wait a minute! You think that the team on the power-play gets the remainder of the 2-minutes of the power-play even after they score?!"

Ok. Calm down, and just hear me out.

You heard me right. I believe that the team on the power-play should get a full 2 minutes of a power-play even after they score, simply put because I think it will create more scoring opportunities.

Once upon a time, the NHL did have this rule in it's early days. But, in 1956, they since abolished the rule because at the time, the Montreal Canadiens were very lethal on the power-play, thus forcing the NHL to change to the format that is still used today.

As I just said earlier, if the NHL brought this rule back, there would be an increase in scoring opportunities.

But, if one were to look at the other side of this argument, they would be telling me that bringing back this rule would result in the officials being reluctant to call too many penalties. But, if the league forced its refs to call the game by the books, they would have no choice but to make the call. However, if officials were to call the game by the rules all the time, it would force players to play in a more disciplined style, thus reducing the number of penalties being called, and improving the flow of the game.

I know I can't be the only one who's pet-peeve of the NHL's rules is not allowing for a full 2-minute power-play even after the team with the man advantage scores.

What do you think about this, Wilderness?

Should the NHL bring this rule back, or are you completely satisfied with how the 2-minute power-play is being handled right now.
