If the Wild sell tickets, and there is a lockout, they will need to find a way to refund those ticket sales. By waiting until after the deadline, people can make that decision knowing what they are getting into. It really does work for all sides involved. Now, if only the owners and players could figure out how to get this done, so we wouldn't need to worry about it.
