Dramatic OT thrillers, hand-eye mid-air chip-ins and dangles so dirty you have to wash your hands for 20 seconds. The second round of the Minnesota Wild Madness Greatest Goal tournament has them all. Your votes have been counted, and the highlight-reel scores that survived and advanced can be seen below.
There weren’t a whole lot of surprises for those who made the Sweet 16. Only two upsets occurred in the first round, the first coming via 22-seed Jason Zucker’s 10-second, defenseman-splitting beginning to a 2015 game against the Winnipeg Jets, taking down the 11 seed, Charlie Coyle’s sneaky behind-the-line wrap-in goal against Edmonton. Coyle did manage to win his other matchup as the 25 seed, taking down Nino Niederreiter’s 8th-seeded diving goal with a strong single-handed effort of his own. Darby Hendrickson avoided being the third major upset of the day, as his iconic first goal in team history endured a close match with the filthy mittens of Marian Gaborik as the 27th seed.
So, without further ado, here are your Sweetest 16 pairings:
(1) Nino’s Game 7 OT Winner vs. (16) Rolston’s Penalty Slapshot
(2) Brunette’s Game 7 OT Winner vs. (15) Bouchard’s Spin-O-Rama
(3) Granlund’s Game 3 OT Dive vs. (14) Gabby’s Fifth of Five
(4) Park Beats Roy in Game 6 OT vs. (13) Koivu’s Vancouver Revenge
(5) Dupuis Bats in Game 7 vs. (12) Fiala’s Dangle
(6) Darby Gets the Wild’s First vs. (22) Zucker Gone in Ten Seconds
(7) Spurgeon Baseball vs. (10) Granlund Splits the D in OT
(9) Vanek’s Dangle vs. (25) Coyle Singlehanded
