He’s coming home.
Minnesota Wild legend and longtime captain Mikko Koivu is reportedly going to be attending the team’s training camp and prospect showcase later this month in some sort of role.
It is completely unclear what he is going to do, but no doubt his 1028 games wearing the Wild sweater is going to be useful for the young phenoms that will be partaking in their first NHL training camp. It’s not hard to imagine that with his resume and status as a franchise player that he will be taking on a player developmental role.
Unfortunately we cannot say that he spent his entire career in Minnesota, as he was let go to seek out other opportunities and signed a one-year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season, but suffered injuries too great to continue after just seven games. But that has certainly not soured his top-tier reputation in the State of Hockey.
Hell, even if it’s just more of a role as a figurehead and being brought in to just give those one-minute “you got this” speeches to the young players that feel out of their depth, it should be worth it. It’s just good to have Mikko back and involved in this organization again.
