  • Kirill Kaprizov Re-Signs with the Wild on Record-Breaking Contract

It's finally done. Superstar Kirill Kaprizov is reportedly re-signing with the Minnesota Wild, keeping him in the State of Hockey beyond this upcoming season.

First reported by ESPN's Kevin Weekes and then later confirmed by The Athletic's Michael Russo, the Wild and Kaprizov have agreed to a contract. There was no official word on the dollar amount or the length, until Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman quickly reported that it is an eight-year extension that will come in with a cap hit over $16 million AAV.

Then, just in time to not let the rumors fester, the Wild officially announced the new deal that keeps the best player in franchise history, in St. Paul for potentially the rest of his career.

This contract will keep him with the Wild through the 2033-34 season and will kick in starting next season, the 2026-27 campaign. Kaprizov was a pending unrestricted free agent and was set to hit the open market next summer, with all 31 other teams licking their lips at the thought of being able to bring in one of the best players in the world.

As Friedman posted, this is the biggest contract in NHL history. Kaprizov now has the highest cap hit in the league, a record previously held by Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews and his $13.25-million AAV, and the Wild star will also have the largest contract in terms of total dollars, with $136 million committed to the 28-year-old winger. Previously, Alex Ovechkin's 13-year, $124-million contract held that title.

This deal now comes after Kaprizov reportedly rejected a deal that was also eight years but exactly $16-million per year. One would have to assume that this slight increase in dollars is something that pushed the deal over the finish line and got the Russian superstar's signature on the dotted line.

Now, the Wild will thankfully be heading into a very crucial 2025-26 season without the noise surrounding their best player. The contract is done and finalized, and now everyone knows where Kaprizov will be playing for several more years.

Last year, Kaprizov scored 25 goals and 56 points in just 41 games and was on pace to finish as a Hart Trophy finalist before an injury derailed his MVP-level season. He already owns the Wild franchise record for most points in a season when he scored 47 goals and 108 points during the 2021-22 campaign, and with some boring contract talks behind him, maybe he'll break his own record once again.

The Wild knew that this would essentially be life or death for the franchise. Either sign him for anything at all and keep your playoff dreams alive and possible contention hopes fruitful, or be a bubble playoff team for eternity.

    Thank goodness that's done.

Huge overpay.  No cup coming to MN with a contract like that for Kap.  Going to be cheering for Colorado now.  At least they have a chance.  Wild front office a bunch of idiots

So that means you will be done posting on this site?

While there are kernel's of truth in this post, the State of Hockey simply cannot let a player of 97's caliber go.  He had to be retained at whatever cost.

That is probably one of the best reasons to sign him at such a high AAV.  Minnesota needs to be considered a legitimate place to go.  A contender willing to spend the money to get there.

This was the only thing they could do.  Even if you hope the newer guys can be, should be, will be, or do become as good as Kap is, the fact that literally no one else in this franchise has done it says, "Yeah, fuck it.". From day one, Kap was just plain better than Gaborik, Parise, Suter, and Boldy and Rossi now

The Wild play better (much) better with him in the lineup.  Is it enough to stop the whining?  Will it stop the Lols if "$17m and they still couldn't win a round?". Sure.

What is also true is other teams best the Wild for decades because they had the talent ceilings the Wild just don't. Kaprizov is an x-factor.

I'm just happy the Wild finally kept one for once.

You seem really high on Haight.  You think he has a chance to make the roster this year?

I thought Trenin was one of our best players last year against Vegas and has looked great in camp.  I'm hopeful he continues this productivity.  For me the Ogz comparison to Trenin is a compliment.

I'm not necessarily high on Haight.  I just think he looks like the closest of our top three forward prospects to making a contribution in NHL.  To be clear, this is not a ringing endorsement of Haight, I just think he has a chance to play effective sheltered NHL minutes this season.

Re: Ogz, a back handed compliment at best.  Playoff Trenin was a serviceable NHL'r.  creating loose pucks on the end boards and crashing opponents is what he did for 5 games in the playoffs.  He still handles the puck like he's using a broom handle and if Ogz can begin to play a more physical game he can become playoff Trenin.  Ogz is a first round pick.

This KEEPS them a bubble team, they didn't get any better, they just didn't get worse. Now they won't be able to afford a true 1A center, so it'll be same same going forward.

There's no chance that is true. There are guys taking team friendly deals all over the place, but McDavid cannot do it, and he's forced to never win a title?

    Makes no sense.

I hope it isn't true.  But a simple phone call can apply a lot of pressure in situations like this.

Fair assessment on Haight.  Had me laughing at the Broom handle comment..

Well they didn’t go the gaborik route. They went the suter  parise route.  That was a great record setting day until it wasn’t . When does the buyout start ?

The contract length and AAV are longer and higher than I was hoping for, but what's done is done, so time to move on.

I did predictions earlier in the offseason on what Kap, Rossi and Gus would sign for and had the total for those three contracts at $31M at the high side, 16M for Kap, 7M for Rossi and 8M for Gus.  If Gus gets 9M, we will hit that mark.

Looking at Puckpedia, we have $23M and change in space next year with 6 roster spots to fill, 3 forwards, 2 D and 1 goalie.  I am going to pencil in Gus at $8M and change to get us to $15M with 5 more roster spots.  Filling out the D with Jiricek and Lambos at a total of $4M (guestimate) would leave us $11M.  A combination of Haight, Heidt, Stramel, or other cheap contracts for 2 out of the remaining three forward spots would leave us with around $9M for someone at the trade deadline or a FA this offseason.  Of course there are other options, but this is the simplest.

Now Billy has to back it up and get 97 a real center...right fucking now! I think the Wild should do whatever it takes to get Thompson from Buffalo. He's under contract for five more years at $7.1M. That would easily work and he would fit perfectly.

Let's go Billy, make this team a real contender! Quit pussyfooting around and make some real moves.

    Other realistic center options??

    Rossi.

    Seriously.

Boldy - Rossi - KK97 have the potential to be great. Combine Boldy's and Kaprizov's performances from the playoffs with Boldy and Rossi having previous chemistry (both were PPG scorers when they were together in the A, and they showed out last week against DAL), and let's see what happens.

I don't think anyone here is ever happy with anything.  I feel the Wild could trade for McDavid and someone here would complain we overpaid etc.  If Billy boy didn't sign 97 these forums would have a meltdown and since he has people are still having a meltdown over the amount and time.

97 had to be signed period, end of debate, you just simply cannot let the best player the Wild has ever had in his prime walk out the door.

97 isn't the problem he will now be made out to be. The Wild need to find ways of moving on from the overpriced veterans that don't bring scoring, we are paying bottom six guys middle six and higher money.

I agree and I love Rossi, I am still upset about the way the team (Billy) treated him. However, who would you pick Rossi or Thompson? It's a highly skilled line, but on the smaller side overall. Some beef up the middle, that may also be more skilled, would make them elite. I'm sure Tage would love to play between 97 and 12 (not that Rossi doesn't).

Edit: I've said this before here, the fans here love their players, not the team. If the Wild are ever going to contend for a cup, they need to make moves and shake things up. I do love Rossi and have a very high opinion of him, but I would still say goodbye in a heartbeat if it would make the team better and get them closer to a championship.

Now that is a scary statement.  Corruption in the NHLPA to ensure others get paid.  I could see it happening as well.

That’s every pro sports league. There are a majority of players NOT getting the huge contracts much less a (relatively) large contract. So those that are paid less want the union to drive average contracts up.

Do you give up Rossi for a winger though?

At $17M AAV, now he really has price on his head.  And the Wild need to protect him more than ever.  Updating the team roster, and comparing against last season, the Wild remain an average height of 72.6" for skaters, and increased the average weight by less than 1 lb, now at 197.6 lbs.  Little to no change in size, hopefully there's more fight in the dog this season.

If McDavid signs for less Kirill is going to look extremely greedy.

It's good for the Wild if Kirill's $17M contract forces other teams to pay their superstars more and hamstrings their rosters.  EDM's got Draisaitl, Nurse, and Bouchard besides McDavid, that's why they have a $2M goalie that can't win them a cup.

Hmmm.  I don't seem to be able to follow that logic.  If they sign for more and hamstring their rosters... isn't that what we did?

There is only two ways that this contract will look good in the end.

    1)  The Wild make it to the Cup finals.

    2)  The cap goes up tremendously and $17M starts to look cheap.
