So the NHL season kicks off in a little over a month now, and it's about time to start thinking Hockey Wilderness Fantasy Hockey League. I've been at the helm on this for a few seasons now, and we've been pretty consistent with how this has been run. All the points are broken down, and we've been pretty avid users of the yahoo leagues for this.

As always I'm completely open to any suggestions or feedback you may have from your previous experiences. We had a ton of interest last season, enough to feed two 16 team leagues which was, in my opinion, far too many teams in each league. This season I'd like to keep the leagues down to 10-12 teams. That will help keep the leagues a bit more competitive.

As always, this will be completely free, winners will be awarded bragging rights for an entire off-season. There is not much else to say about the leagues, if you would like a detailed look of how the points will break down I can provide you the documentation via email.

If you are interested in joining the league, you will need to submit your request to my email so I can send back invites. I can be reached at thenoogiehw@gmail.com.

Any questions you have can be left in the comments below and I'll respond accordingly.

Some information on scoring formats, let me know your thoughts on this. We're nothing if not flexible here. All information below is copied directly from Yahoo's fantasy sports help pages.

    HEAD-TO-HEAD

Each week, you'll battle a new opponent from your league in a series of "games" to see who can accumulate the most points in certain stat categories.

You'll play one "game" per stat category, so if your league uses 10 different categories, you'll play 10 "games" against the same opponent.

To win a "game," accumulate a higher total than your opponent in the given category (if you end up with the same total, you'll each earn a "tie" for that game).

At the end of the week, your record will reflect how well your team performed in each of the games.

For example, say you out-performed your opponent in 6 out of 10 categories and tied in another -- your record for the week would be 6-3-1, their record would be 3-6-1.

Over the course of the season, your weekly win-loss total will be added to a cumulative season record, and the teams with the best records at the end of the season will compete in the league playoffs.

    HEAD-TO-HEAD ONE WIN

"Head-to-Head - One Win" Leagues operate exactly the same as standard Head-to-Head Leagues, except for one difference -- only one "win" is handed out in each week's matchup.

Think of it this way: Each of your weekly category "games" are worth "points" instead. If you win more games than your opponent (score more "points"), your team gets credited with the overall win in the matchup.

For example, say you out-performed your opponent in 6 out of 10 categories and tied in another -- your record for the week would be 1-0 (since you scored the most "points") and their record would be 0-1.

    HEAD-TO-HEAD POINTS

"Head-to-Head - Points" Leagues are a different animal. Instead of playing multiple, stat category-based "games" against a single opponent each week, "points" are scored separately by each player in your starting lineup.

Based on your players' performance in certain stat categories, points are scored and added to your team's cumulative, weekly total.

For example, if homerun is worth 5 points in your league, players in your starting lineup will earn 5 points each time they hit a homerun.

If your team's starting lineup score more points in your weekly matchup than your opponent's, your team gets credited with the overall win in the matchup.

For example, say your team's players scored a cumulative 55 points and your opponent's only scored 48 -- your record for the week would be 1-0 (since you outscored your opponent) and their record would be 0-1.

Just as in other Head-to-Head leagues, your weekly win-loss total will be added to a cumulative season record, and the teams with the best records at the end of the season will compete in the league playoffs.

    ROTISSERIE (ROTO)

In a "Rotisserie" (AKA "Roto") League, it's every man (or woman) for themselves.

Instead of being matched-up against an opponent each week, every team will be awarded points at the end of the season based on their overall ranking (from first to last) in each of several stat categories.

For example, say you're in a 12-team Fantasy Basketball league. The team with the most total free throws at the end of the season will receive 12 points. The team with the 2nd most will recieve 11 points, and so on.

After the points are totalled across all of your league's scoring categories, the team with the most points will be named the league's champion!
