Monday, the Minnesota Wild signed goaltender John Curry to a two way AHL-NHL deal. This replaces Curry's AHL-ECHL deal that was previously in place, so in all likelihood, he will not be returning to the Orlando Solar Bears this season. He cleared waivers yesterday.
So, who is John Curry? If you follow the Solar Bears or the Iowa Wild, you've certainly found out by now. If you follow me on twitter, you know I'm a huge fan. He was previously with the Hamburg Freezers of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL, and the Wheeling Nailers, Orlando Solar Bears, and the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL. He played his college hockey for Boston University where he was a Hobey Baker finalist and Hockey East Player of the Year.
The Shorewood, MN native attended Breck School, graduating in 2002. He also spent a year at the Taft School in Connecticut post Breck. At Breck, he was captain and MVP his senior year, earning a 1.80 GAA. At Taft, he had a 1.46 GAA and a .920 SV%. Following Taft, he opted for Boston University where he studied economics. He went from playing 5 minutes his freshman year to becoming the assistant captain his final year. His college stats are 2.08 GAA and SV% of .942.
He was signed undrafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2007 where Chuck Fletcher was the assistant GM. He was slated to split time between the AHL and ECHL but injuries to others allowed him to stay in the AHL. In his rookie season, he established himself as a starter and helped lead the team to the Calder Cup finals. He played 177 games for WBS, 7 for their ECHL affiliates. He also has 33 playoff games with the WBS Penguins. He was called up to the NHL twice while with the Pittsburgh organization. He holds a 2-2 record in the NHL, a .916 SV% and a 2.42 GAA. Presently in the AHL, he has a lifetime SV% of .910 and a GAA of 2.44. This year with Iowa, he has a GAA of 1.90 and a SV% of .939.
John Curry was fined in 2012 for squirting Gwinnett Gladiators fans with water following a game. In 2008, Curry and Joey MacDonald of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the time received fighting, leaving the crease, and game misconduct penalties. He will be 30 at the end of this month (2-27-84). He recently endorsed Defending the Blue Line.Ge
