  • Does Marcus Johansson Have A Future In Minnesota?

Since the Minnesota Wild traded for Marcus Johansson again in 2023, I have been optimistic about his potential. Even though Johansson has been in the league since 2010-11 (I was only seven when he entered), watching the 32-year-old winger score six goals and 18 points in 20 games caught my attention.

A year later, the Wild extended Johansson for two more years, and all the hype around him bringing offensive upside has subsided. Johansson finished that season with 11 goals and 30 points through 78 games.

Johansson will be an unrestricted free agent after this season. Does that mean his time in Minnesota is over?

Nobody expected Johansson to be a point-per-game player for the Wild, but there was a chance that his second stint with Minnesota could help his confidence. After he had a 58-point breakout season with the Washington Capitals in the 2016-17 season, Johansson has changed teams seven times throughout his career. Since scoring 58 points in 2016-17, Johansson has failed to score more than 30 points for a team – until this season.

Johansson has scored nine goals and 30 points with only six games left in the season. He’s on the cusp of scoring more points for the Wild than he ever has, and it will be the most he’s scored for a single team since 2016-17.

So, should the Wild extend him?

By the time you read this, the Wild will have already played the New York Islanders, giving Johansson his chance to break 30 points for the first time in almost a decade. Also, consider that Johansson is coming off a game where he scored a goal and three points against the New York Rangers. There’s a good chance we will see Johansson playing with confidence.

Therefore, the Wild may feel justified in extending him.

Breaking 30 points doesn’t make one a star. Still, it may be just what Johansson needed to prove he can still play a middle-six role. Johansson’s scoring has also come at an opportune time. The Wild have struggled to score goals all year, so they may seek offense from anywhere they can get it.

Johansson has scored four goals and 14 points in his last 19 games. Since late February, Johansson has played at almost a point a game. He isn’t scoring at the rate of Matt Boldy or Marco Rossi, but he is becoming an essential part of the offense. Johansson’s speed and playmaking ability are good enough to change the game's pace in a second.

He had one of the best (shorthanded) goals I’ve seen from the Wild this season midway through their last game against the Rangers. Retaining that kind of talent at a team-friendly cost may be worth it, even if Johansson only offers sporadic offense.

Johansson is in a contract year. While the Wild are far from guaranteed a playoff spot, if Johansson can prove reliable in the offseason, I would love to see him on the bench next year. However, the Wild lost five of their last six games. There’s a good chance they will miss the playoffs for the second year, and Johansson may want to finish his career with a bona fide contender.

The Wild are sitting in the second wild card spot in the West with 89 points in 76 games. The Calgary Flames are behind them with 84 points in 75 games. Right now, the Wild are trying to survive as long as possible until they can get Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek back. That means other players must step up, and Johansson has done his part.

I don’t know what is going through Bill Guerin’s mind. However, Johansson has proven worthy of an extension, especially if he plays well at the end of the season.

I might be bucking the trend here, but what ELC player would have gotten us better production than MoJo this year?

Was it Knut and his 2 goals? (FYI he's put up 2g/1a in his 14 games with the bruins along side Lindholm/Lauko)

Or was it the grape dealer, Lauko, who stunned us with his 3g/3a through 38 games?

Why not bring up Ohgren?  In his 25 game cup of coffee he put up 2g/3a and was -6 on the +/-.

March & April, MoJo's put up 12 points in 17 games.  Over the same period Zuccarello's done 11 points, FreddyG's done 9 points, Hartman's done 8 points, Nyquist's done 5 points...I'm not even going to bother looking up Trenin, Brazeau, Hinnostroza, etc...

Unfortunately, MoJo's been a significant part of this teams albeit anemic offense.  This season's been a revolving door of ELC guys, none of whom have been able to be more productive than MoJo...

#90 has been a necessary evil to me at least. I can't stand his play but he's been okay on paper offensively. I think Ogie was potentially capable as a replacement but nowhere near the experience. Out of respect for NoJo, I believe they're giving him the benefit of his NHL career with a secure role.

There really wasn't a suitable guy to replace NoJo and Ogie waiting isn't a terrible problem while playing NoJo wasn't the absolute worst. I normally rip him whenever possible but there were times when he played alright.

Most of all, I think he's wrong for the fit and getting older. The Wild need to reconfigure the lines this off-season and NoJo isn't one of the players I wanna see come back. Zuccy or potentially Nyquist, who has helped the PK would be better players to extend.

NoJo gives ya something, but it's just a partial package. Many of us agree he's got some qualities but we'd rather see Ogie grow or Yurov be handed a spot than NoJo come back and blow coverage or water-ski backcheck.

To post a very unpopular opinion, if you were able to unload some dead weight (not likely) I would entertain a low priced 2 year, no protections contract for Nyquist.  He seems to have more skill than all of our bottom 6 so I would let him play over someone like Shore, NoJo, Trenin, etc.

But he is too old for more than a team friendly 2 year with no protections.

As flat as Nyquist has been since he got here I agree with your post 100%.  Law of averages says we get a better Nyqzy next season.

That’s if he’s signed. He’s a free agent after the season. You want to gamble for the potential for improved performance next year? For how long and for what price? He’s making over 3 mil a year currently. Not worth what he’s getting paid. Even at a discount I could see 1.5 for a one year prove it contract. Or more likely, Billy G lets him walk and we’re out a second round pick for no reason.

What is the expectation of a $2m player? A guy who has flaws but can put up 30 points on the wing is probably the definition of that.

Someone tell BG that, he hasn't gotten the memo...

MJ doesn’t fit the identity of this team. Taking the entirety of his time with the Wild he’s just “Not Tough Enough.” He might have some success out East. It’d be fun if Chicago picked him up. Why? I don’t know but seeing him skating around in a Blackhawks  jersey next to Bedard would be hilarious.

The reason bill should be immediately fired if he resigns NoJo (regardless of aav or term) is because the team and fans have watched NoJo play half speed, half hearted, half assed for 3/4 of his time here.  Then when his contract is coming up he commits and plays like a competent nhl’r.  That has got to be so sickening for his teammates to watch night after night and gotta be poison to the team chemistry

Nyquil is damn near 36 years old, and a 36 year old hockey player who's production has fallen off a cliff isn't a candidate for what this club need to do.  I know Crosby, Ovechkin, Burns, Pavelski, etc are productive north of 35 years old, but Nyquist aint Crosby/Ovechkin/Burns/Pavs.

Seriously man, what did MoJo do to you?

Dude is on a $2M contract with no movement protection and he's been a significant chunk of the offense for the past month here.

I've got no problem with a 'bogosian-esque' contract (~$1.5M x 2ish) with no movement protection (give him trade again, idk) for the guy if he's going to do nothing but sit in the press box and provide depth to the team.

Before all the fancy analytics and Dom's player cards, the yardstick was $100k/pt which would put MoJo well out-earning his current contract.

Can you try to drag any other player?  What about Trenin ($3.5M for another THREE FUCKING years), Hinnostroza has gone flat, Brazau has looked like a nothing-burger, and Nyquist is an expensive version of MoJo.  There are a lot of other targets on this team.

He’s made me watch him steal money thru 3/4 of his contracts here.  That and watch him ‘accidentally’ fall in the corners to avoid contact.  Again his teammates are watching this too
