  • Can the Wild Afford To Lose A Race For Peter DeBoer?

How much can you panic about a 3-5-2 start?

While the Minnesota Wild are in seventh place in the Central Division, it wouldn't have taken much for a few games to break differently. If one of four shots in overtime goes in on Sunday night, for example, the Wild would have entered Monday at a much more palatable 4-5-1 record. It's a small difference, but having two extra points in the bank would make a big difference in perception.

Maybe you don't think it's time to panic -- and perhaps you shouldn't. But it's clear from Bill Guerin's actions that the slow start has him concerned.

After the team's 1-3-1 road trip, the Wild President of Hockey Operations sat down with The Athletic to stress how important their homestand would be. “You can’t say, ‘Oh, we have 70-something games left.’ It doesn’t work like that. If you fall too far behind or if you’re not solid at the beginning, you can really put yourself in a bad spot for the playoffs."

They've since dropped two games to teams that failed to make the postseason last year. At home. In front of fans who put boos on the ice in both games.

We don't have any indication that a coaching change is being considered in Minnesota. The Athletic's piece doesn't mention it, and Guerin has not given Hynes the dreaded Vote Of Confidence, a sure sign that we're on a road to Coaching Change City. It's unlikely to be considered, especially given that Hynes and Guerin go back to their days in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL.

All we know is that there is a difference-making coach out there: Peter DeBoer.

In a league full of coaches that feel relatively interchangeable and are constantly recycled, DeBoer stands out for his success and staying power. In 10 trips to the playoffs, he's made the Conference Finals eight times, with four different teams. He's made two Stanley Cup Final appearances. Or, to put it in a different, more pointed way: He has fewer first-round exits than the Wild have playoff series wins in the past two decades.

His record doesn't come without flaws -- he lost his locker room after three seasons with the Dallas Stars after alienating Jake Oettinger. DeBoer also lasted a grand total of 160 regular-season games with the Vegas Golden Knights, despite two consecutive Conference Finals. Still, it's hard to deny his impact on a team or his ability to manage his way through a playoff series.

But hey, this is the part where we need to take a small step back and say that it's too early to change coaches. For one, John Hynes could turn things around. Again, it's just 10 games. It's also worth noting that Hynes is trying to keep this team running smoothly while integrating several rookie players into the lineup. We can also note that he's looking good on his biggest point of contention with the fans and media -- keeping the currently red-hot Marcus Johansson in an elevated role.

There's a good reason not to slam the panic button in October. Luck can be a huge factor early on in the season, and indeed, it's been a factor with Minnesota. Their 5-on-5 shooting percentage is 6.28%, the lowest in the NHL. Say what you want about the team's depth issues, but the Wild shouldn't be dead-last in the NHL at 5-on-5 shooting with a healthy Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy, and Joel Eriksson Ek.

But we also have to be real about what this team's playing like -- one of the worst in the league.

The Wild aren't just not burying chances, they're not generating them, either. The team is 26th in expected goals for per hour at 5-on-5 (2.38), which is below punchless teams like the New York Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks. They're also alarmingly leaky on defense, surrendering 3.00 expected goals per hour at 5-on-5, 25th in the league.

Add it up, and the Wild are a bottom-five team in 5-on-5 expected goals for percentage (44.2%). They're 23rd in shot attempt percentage (47.2%), which means that even though they've been unlucky, they have more or less earned being dead last in goals for percentage (37.0%).

All this raises the question of whether the Wild -- who are a win-now team that has an urgent need to turn things around -- can afford to be too slow to land DeBoer. Whatever team is first on the draw to make a move presumably has the inside track on DeBoer, and there isn't anyone else of DeBoer's caliber for the team that goes second.

Would such a move be fair to Hynes? It wouldn't be, but the same thing was true of Drew Bannister when he coached the St. Louis Blues last year. In his first full season as a coach of any NHL team, the Blues dismissed him after a 9-12-1 start and installed Jim Montgomery, who is generally considered an elite coach in the league. They saw a chance to upgrade to an elite coach, and it worked. The Blues got to the playoffs and took the President's Trophy-winning Winnipeg Jets to seven games.

Under normal circumstances, it probably makes the most sense to stick with Hynes through the season to see if he can turn things around. If so, great. The Wild did what they should do: Make the playoffs.

However, if not, the team can move on, knowing that Hynes got a fair shake in a league where the average coach's shelf life is between 2 and 2.5 years. But fair or not, it's hard to look at there being one, and only one, elite free-agent coach floating out there with so much playoff success without wondering if the Wild would be best-served to move quickly.

I got myself to a point where I was sick of being sick of NoJo.  I felt neutral re NoJo.  I can feel the hate rising again…maybe I’ve gone full circle and it’s starting over again.
We have confirmation that a one year contract is the only contract for NoJo. He’s useful only when playing for his next contract

If the Wild keep struggling, what will the response be from the owner? How secure is Guerins job? I imagine Hynes only has job security until the owner directs the front office to make changes. The owner loves his playoff ticket revenue, so I would expect a change if they fail to make the playoffs.

The best time to fire Hynes was the day after they hired him. The 2nd best time is right now. He is the very definition of mediocre.

Unfortunately it won't happen. BG makes moves to protect his job and nothing more.  He will keep Hynes around through this year and fire him in the office season in order to buy a couple more years with a new coach.

Really we should be firing the coach and GM. They should have both been fired at the end of this past season with the pathetic roster management during the playoffs.

No way on DeBore.  He creates way too much dissention.   I don't like Hynes at all but no to DeBoer.  We've had Boudreau, Eason, and now Hynes coaching essentially the same Wild team over the past few years.  It's time to start giving some serious thought to dumping some players.

The real question is what makes Pete D such a winning and successful coach? Maybe the Wild brain trust can figure that out. If the reasons can fit well with the Wild’s needs behind the bench then pull the trigger. Keep Hynes as an assistant. Isn’t that exactly how he played Rossi in last year’s playoffs? Hartman was better so he got elevated. It’s not personal it’s winning hockey. It’s time for aggressive moves. My personal opinion? Well it would be extremely entertaining. But hey I’m just a fan.

    Two things.

NoJo has a history of reeling us in only to beat us on the head like an unwanted bullhead.

JEE needs a vision check, stick check, something check. He couldn't hit the net if he was standing in it. It's almost like he plays for the NBA and checks the betting lines.

It might be sooner than that if the team continues to play this poorly. Deano got the ax in order to kickstart the team after a slow start to that season.

Yes this did happen, but how many times can bill go to this well.  I think Hynzy get's this full season but something definitely has to happen to right this ship so I'll predict one (or more) of the apathetic journeyman core get's dealt away and prepare to get underwhelmed by the return bill gets.  bill needs to send a wake up call to this lineup of unmotivated, tired journeyman with no move clauses.  It wasn't that long ago that bill felt it necessary to trade away Eric Staal to Buffalo for.......wait for it........you guessed it, Nojo.  This was because the thin skinned tough guy wanted to shake up a roster that was too complacent.  I would say that's right where this current group is, so nice leadership you dip shit.

    Manage your expectations Wild faithful.

We fans don't know what is going on behind the scenes.  But it sure seems like something bad is happening.  I haven't seen this many high danger chances against us since Dean was coach just before he got fired.  We are not keeping opposing teams shots to the outside at all.

We are seeing poor play up and down the roster.  It isn't just one player.  It isn't just mistakes by the young guys either.  Everyone is playing bad.  Hynes needs to figure it out or expect to get fired.  BG may want to consider himself as being on the hotseat as well.  This team has too much talent to be playing like this.

To be fair, 2 of the goals against in the last one were bumper hockey where they banked it off of their player's leg in front of the goal rather than sending it in off a stick. Wallstedt could have done better on a number of others, but those are both lucky and incredibly tough to defend.

The Wild will need one of their best games of the season tonight, but if they can manage a win over the Jets, things might feel a bit less dire.

All NHL players want their name on the cup. The Wild players, like the fans, were expecting Christmas Morning this past offseason after they've been waiting for it for years themselves. What did they get? What did we all get? Tarastinko and the ghost of Nico Sturm.

Add on top of that, a record breaking contract for 97 that pretty much ensures this team will be status quo for at least the next couple of years. Of course this affects every player on the roster. All of these players that want their names on the cup, and have been waiting for years for a legitimate chance, now have to wait even longer. They are getting older and literally watching their careers fade away without even a sniff. It's safe to assume that they've all been spoon fed Billy's master five year plan and promised "it's coming, just be patient".

Not sure why so many people defend or even like Bill Guerin. Just look at his Wild resume, what has he done since becoming the GM? He started by putting the Wild in cap hell, for years. What did that accomplish? Nothing. They were never any better, they didn't accomplish anything more, and all it did was make the franchise difficult to operate and an undesirable destination. How many vets has he brought in that have literally done nothing to make this team better? He's drafted two difference makers in six years, that's it. Almost every single trade he's made has had no effect on the Wild's success. The only good trade, in hindsight, was getting Faber and a 1st (Ohgren) for Fiala. It's looking more and more like Ohgren is going to be a bust and Faber is quickly coming down from great to just good. I would argue that this team would have had more success over the last three seasons with Fiala on the team and not Faber. A decision had to be made, keep Fiala or keep Fleury. While it was cool and felt good to keep Fleury, I also believe that Talbot would have been the better goaltender to keep over the last three seasons.

Just my two cents, obviously, but this team has issues, and they have for years. I know this current roster will never win a cup, so I'm ready for a rebuild. I would much rather watch the youth learn the game, and lose, than watch old tired vets, who don't seem to give a shit, lose. Watching Utah is fun and exciting. They are all in on the youth movement, and it's working.

Billy didn't right the ship, he just rocked the boat even harder.

Wild have gone sideways for all of bill's years as GM (since Aug 2019).

The only cavalry now are the prospect's.  Which one of the kids is going to pull us up out of this?  Or is Benak the white knight now?

I can see the claim based on how the team played early last season with about the same roster. But was that start an aberration or what this roster should be?

I have to admit... I expected more this summer.  Contracts for Kirill and Rossi.  Signed Vlad and Sturm.  Less than $5M cap space.  It hurts.

That was peak apathetic core after a season where they got their coach fired and then missed playoffs with new coach.  Every single player started last season with something to prove.  Then 97 went down and all the air went out of the ballon.  Thanks Wild, now I sound like Sam.  Hope you’re happy.

None this year.  We've earned this horrible record.  But I don't hate the entire roster.  I like our D-core and feel like the majority of forwards are capable. I think we clearly lack 2 top 6 players and 1 or 2 bottom 6 players.

If I think of it that way we really shouldn't be that bad of a team.  No roster is 100% complete.   But players have to stop looking at the guy next to him and do their own job better.  Faber made that statement and he played his best game of the season even though it was a loss.  With this roster we may not be a division leading team.  But we shouldn't be bottom dwellers either....yet here we are.

After 25 years of being a fan this year is really disheartening.  During the buyouts you at least had the hope of what possibilities lie ahead . If Billy’s plan had worked we should be the exciting team with young talent mixed in with vets Billy had deemed as ones to lead us to a cup . Instead the beginning of the season you see all the bottom feeder teams with there plethora of talent playing exciting hockey. And we’re still the same team as 6 years ago . Same leadership or lack there of. Same problems. Same mediocrity. We should be excited about this year if our gm had done his job the past years.  Kappy at14 million. , young draft picks finding there way and hungry vets wanting a cup.  We got jack shit for x’mas . A 17 million dollar guy who looks more like his career will follow the vlad trajectory than Sidney Crosby  and draft picks that can’t develop.  Maybe some of the kids will be quality players but not the over the top talent we need. Like the Utah , San Jose , ducks, Chicago , New Jersey etc.  it sucks seeing our rebuild getting passed by  the bottom feeders finally finding there way. I would have taken 6 years of suck for celebrini   Cooley , Hughes  and on an on . Rossi is a decent player but not on the level of these guys or a #1 center.. Yurov looks like he’s legit but more 3 rd line 200 ft player. Not the #1 center we need . Zeev is a glorified Calen Addison. Can skate and that’s it. No defense whatsoever or a care to play it . Ohgren. Who knows . Definitely isn’t taking advantage of his b.s. opportunities. Faber is solid but not great. Wally. Who knows. The other kids in minors. Yeah whatever that they’ll make it getting developed by us. They will be throw ins on trades.
It sucks seeing the next decade of mediocrity is upon us. Unless Billy starts taking big swings and shaking this team to the core. We don’t have time for kappy to get older waiting on kids not to develop. The coach needs to be fired. We need a  playoff coach to light a fire and put some vets in there places. . This idea we can sit in a bubble 6 years and think the vets of the past are our future is ridiculous. Big swings Billy or get the F out of dodge

I stand by my original plan. Kick Hynes to the front office and hire DeBoer to coach the team. The only thing we have here is that Dallas may still own DeBoer's rights, so he might not be as available as we think.

We need some new eyes in here, and DeBoer has a habit of developing the kids. I suspect he is very direct with them on what he wants, and demands it. I don't think he'd put up with slow start after slow start.
