  • Gamethread: Wild at Flyers (6:30 p.m.)

Big picture, the Minnesota Wild and Philadelphia Flyers are very different teams. One is consistently in the playoffs (while getting booted out in the first round) and has some top-tier players that teams drool over, and the other is just beginning the long and arduous task of rebuilding in the National Hockey League. But when it comes down to the nasty stuff — the real small details of how each team clicks and works and shifts, they are extremely similar.

This season, for the Flyers, it’s all about work ethic. Some players last season did not want their game to be about that — not naming names! — but with those guys gone, John Tortorella is able to have his team shift to that next gear in some games and overburden teams with how much they damn work. The Flyers are just getting started to do this, while the Wild have been doing it for the last few years.

Now, these two teams are colliding in a game that could go in essentially two ways.

The first is what we somewhat expect when two teams with this mentality go up against one another, a showdown of work and a butting of heads as neither team wants to give up offensive chances and will build up a wall in front of their goaltender before even thinking of trying to drive up the ice into the other zone. This will just make it a boring 1-1 game that heads to overtime and then a shootout and leaves no one satisified.

The other way is much more exciting. One team simply works harder and is able to overpower the other one in just about every category. The more successful team pushes and pushes until the eventual loser is completely gassed and then breaks. Maybe the teams will be tied heading into the third period but the conditioning just can’t keep up and then we see a flurry of goals (like what happened in Vegas on Tuesday).

Either way, it will be interesting to see just how these similar teams on different paths look smashing into one another.

Show me something before the end of the period Wild or I'm going to do something useful with my time, like watching repeats of the Rockford Files (TM Common Man).

Sweet team, Guerin.  Good thing they’re all locked up for 3 years.

I'm kind of ok with the extensions with the exception of Moose. That made no f'ing sense whatsoever.

IMO the timing of the extensions is the problem. If they had a great year and priced themselves out of an extension. Then great ! We probably had a good season. If they have a bad year then we still had options to trade or not resign . Now we’re stuck. The extensions are fair but not for a team with no money. Imo

Is it their ability to play good? I'm not sure.

Does the coach or the players make sure they're playing good each night and having the best chance to win?

Just sayin, it's probably not just one thing alone...

Hearing the ESPN announcers rather than the homers is quite sobering. They say it as they see it. And they ain't liking what they're seeing from the Wild. Words like; sluggish, bogged down and slow should have BG fuming. I  hope so anyway.

A good coach with a tanking team that will sell ya any player for fair price versus an average to below average coach with a good team on paper.
He’s had these guys 3 years . Ya think he might know how to motivate them by now.

Coach Rick T. Has Vancouver looking like a good team this year after the dumpster fire they had last few years . I know it won’t happen but I’d be curious who Billy g has on his short list of coaches.  This team looks lost or they’re tuning out the coach.

Looks like Brink is the MN kid who kills the Wild this time...

Funny, you take a young kid with speed and skill and let him learn by getting out there and letting it rip. Huh? I  thought you had to spend a few years in the AHL beefing up and getting gritty. Who knew it was scoring goals that wins hockey games? Again the ESPN announcers had a lot of choice words for the Wild and Gritty was definitely not one of them. BG must be awfully proud tonight.
