Article: The Wild Face Two Hurdles In Trying To Land Ryan O'Reilly

I think the Wild went after Hughes because he became the best player available. Last year some top wingers became available but we were still in the Buyouts. What’s the narrative in MN if Wild management diddled around on arguably this year’s biggest NHL trade and another team landed him? The next trade is important too and we’ve got the assets and cap space to make one. It’ll be the best player available we can afford that’s willing to come to MN. We look like a serious contender and having Hughes comes with that bonus. The Wild have some size and those players will need to bring it come playoff time.

While everyone may have known Hughes wanted out, there were SIX teams that were trying to land him. That kind of bidding war is going to drive up the price.

Guerin was late to this party. There were already 2 acceptable offers from NJ and Wash. on the table. Because of the closeness that JR and Guerin had in Pittsburgh, Guerin either knew the offers he had to beat or had a pretty good idea of what they were.

Let's be honest here, we knew Guerin wanted another top player to go along with Kaprizov and Boldy. At that point, one became available. He wanted to walk away with the player and may have paid a little extra to take him home that night.

Sometimes you know when the other guy is holding most of the cards and several people want the same thing (and there's only 1). And any top 10 player in the league is going to generate a lot of interest. Typically, the guy who has the best player won the deal. At this point in time, Hughes is that guy.

Now, I'll also say that re-signing Hughes is a must for this to be worth it. I don't think I would have gone in this direction if I were him, but he did. Can we now just enjoy the success that Hughes has brought and the talent that he has? It puts us on the same level as Dallas and Colorado as far as the star players go. We lack their strength down the middle, but as far as star power, we're right in the mix.

We need to trade for a Tkachuk style player, while also holding onto Yurov and Wallstedt. If we can do this, we will be just fine come playoff time. Move Spurgeon to clear cap space if needed and do whatever it takes to keep Zuccarello healthy and prductive.
