0 Stanley Cups Verified Member
At first I was stunned at the price we paid, but then I've come around to the excitement of getting a player of this caliber in his prime. Vancouver definitely wanted Rossi and Buium to make this deal happen, I'm just not sure we needed to give them both a 2026 first-round pick and Ohgren, I would've thought either additional piece would've been enough to land Hughes, not both. But Billy loves to give that little extra: four pieces for Hughes, five (minus one as Hunt returned) for Jiricek. But we're quickly running out of additional asset capital to acquire another top 6 scorer at some point, and some of the roster ain't getting any younger. At least Billy finally took his big swing! Just surprised it was at defense again and not center. If Quinn re-signs: absolutely terrific! If not, we can still recoup those assets. And if the Wild get hosed in the end, Billy G is canned, so either way change will be happening! I'm betting he re-signs a short term deal with the Wild after this season, he's got to love being coveted by a team that truly wants him here and wants to win.

I don't see why he wouldn't want the long-term deal. He can always be traded in the middle of the contract if he really wants. As for our asset capital, I think we still have plenty. They aren't likely but, depending on how many more big swings Billy wants to take, Yurov and Wallstedt are more blue-chippers. Tarasenko can be put on waivers or included in a trade to add $4.75M to the books. Trenin could be traded for another $3.5M without disrupting the team too much. He has a 2027 1st round pick. All his 2028 picks. He's got prospects in both the AHL and the NCAA that are promising. He's got plenty of 3rd through 7th rounders for the next few years to boot. 1

Stramel could be our next trade chip or be our fourth line center at the end of his college season, but he'll likely need AHL time, maybe if Hlavaj or Spacek has a good olympics that could boost their stock. I hope we hang onto to both Yurov and Wally for the present time. 1

You are only gonna start 1 goalie in the playoffs anyway. But yeah, I'm thinking of Stramel or Ritchie when I'm talking about their appealing prospects.
MNCountryLife Verified Member
I wonder if the locker room at Vancouver has improved a lot over last year. If Patrick Allvin can't get that room under control he will likely have more players wanting out... including the 3 we just gave him. Food for thought. MNCountryLife Verified Member
I still have concerns about the contract. But I will definitely enjoy watching Hughes be Hughes. BG seems to understand the mindset of players and how they appreciate it when a GM goes all in on them. BG has been on both sides of the desk. I would give him a roughly 70% chance of signing Hughes in the off-season. I'm looking forward to having a competitive team make a run for the cup for the next 8 years. 🍻

Trading Wally for anything less than a top-10 player would be disappointing because of his current level of play, his contract and his age (potential to get even moar bettererer). But that’s just my opinion…
