Article: It's Time To Start a Jesper Wallstedt Calder Discussion

The title asks if The Wall can win the Calder. This sums it up: Wrong Trophy

Quote

Wallstedt probably won’t win the Calder, but he looks like he can be the goalie on a Stanley Cup-winning team.

Right now, I would put Buium ahead of The Wall for our Calder representation. Luke is absolutely right when he talks about games. Hynes has been using him as a true backup, and just lately, he's begun to trust him. I'd love a 47-30 split in games started and think that's good balance to have 2 goalies fresh for playoff play should we get that far.

But, we also need to look at this team. Should Rossi (who I've heard has a broken foot) stay out for a long stretch, and Yurov takes off in the top line center role, his point total could put him in the conversation. On defense, we've got Buium who has looked really good, and put up some points.

In reality, most of the guys voting for this stuff see the Wild maybe 3 times a year. There's such large market/east coast bias that there's not much of a chance for a Wild player to get it. Kaprizov accomplished it when we played a very condensed schedule including 16 games against LA area teams. Faber came close to accomplishing it but that's about where it stops.

If Yurov, The Wall, and Buium all perform really well, our team should do well. But, as for the Calder, they would split the votes. Shaefer is in the NY area. He'll get a lot of press and east coast bias votes.

I'd rather just have the last trophy Luke mentioned.

Well this article guarantees he will go out in his next game and shit the bed.

Maybe the Calder front runner on just our team but he hasn’t played near enough games to warrant this discussion. Even Jay night he may have won but I thought at least two of those goals seemed super soft and one was 100% because he didn’t his pad flat against the ice.

I’m honestly not trying to be overly negative but Wally is still very young and I don’t want us to set him up to fail or have unrealistic expectations

I was thinking the same thing, but I would have left out the super part and just categorized them as soft.  They were both redirected, which adds some difficulty,. and you are right about his pad not being flat against the ice.

Aho's goal was a snipe so I don't fault him on that one.  For most of the night the puck was sticking to Wally and he was lights out in the shootout.  Although, if he didn't let in the softer goals they would have won in regulation.  Still got to give him credit though.

It would not surprise me in the least to see BG traide one of our goalies for offensive help. Both are playing well and teams could certainly overpay in a desperation move.

I wouldn't mind seeing this happen.  The Wall is taller and bigger than Gus.  Both are good goalies and capable of keeping us in a game.  I just feel that Wally is the long term solution.  I also think Cal Petersen is a servicable backup with NHL experience.   An overpay to get Gus could net us some assets to help the roster.

I understand wanting to start conversation, but agree it's far too early to be talking about Calder trophies. There are already 3 rookie skaters with 15 points on the year and those guys would likely be front runners, along with other defensemen like Artyom Levshunov or Buium.

Wallstedt might need 40 starts to get in the conversation, and he currently has less than 10. Not sure it's worth beginning these conversations for at least another month. Too much season left for meaningful conversation in my mind.

Is there any doubt that Celebrini takes it?

I thought he already has?

Celebrini was technically 3rd behind Lane Hutson in his rookie year, but yeah, I'm pretty doubtful that he can be in the running for the Calder this season.

He is top 5 in points per game, so could be in the running for other hardware, and will almost certainly be the best player from his draft class.

Russo notes

- Bogo off IR (possibly playing tonight)

- Sturm likely returns on Sunday

- Jiricek has been sent back to Iowa

Not sure how i feel about Bogo playing tonight. Who comes out? Is Bogo better than any that have been playing?

Looks like Bogo is replacing Hunt.  I like Bogo.  The guy is smart and tough on D.  But Hunt has been playing well.  That had to be a tough decision by Hynes and an even tougher talk with Hunt.

i agree that Bogo is smart and tough on D which the team really needs. My concern is that his mobility is severely compromised. When Zeev pushed the offensive button, will Bogo be able to cover the D if needed? We want Zeev to push his offensive ability.

Agree with all your takes here.  Injuries will probably bring huntzy right back up 35W in next week or two so he should get more big league reps soon enough

I'd be surprised if Hunt would make it to Iowa before he's claimed off waivers.  He's going to have to learn from the press box at times.

Ah yes, you're right. I forgot he played in full last year.

That’s called being facetious. I was making a joke about him being the predetermined golden-boy. I may be dumb, but I ain’t that dumb..
