Article: It's Starting To Feel Like 2023 Again For the Minnesota Wild

So, you can't have playoff hockey for 20 out of 25 years without having bottom of the first round picks.

See Detroit's playoff run (with a couple of championships sprinkled in), and now.

I am not sure how much Spurgeon might be on the PK and that being a contributing factor.

That doesn't give you a -. Only even strength or PP gives you a -. However, I do believe ENG also will give you a -.

Now let's look at our vets and their clauses: Note-Remember there is a cap floor

  • Of the forwards, I would certainly keep the top paid guys, Kaprizov, Boldy, Ek, Rossi
  • Tarasenko-8 team trade list
  • Zuccarello- NMC
  • Foligno-NMC, I think he would go to a playoff contender
  • Hartman-15 team NTC
  • Trenin-No clause
  • Johansson-No clause listed (he might have a handshake deal)
  • Pitlick, Jones, Hinostroza-No clause
  • Of the defense, I'd certainly keep most, Faber, Buium, Jiricek, Middleton, Brodin
  • Hunt-can't move or goes back to CBJ
  • Spurgeon-10 team NTC
  • Brodin-No clause

Goalies are fine

What I would recommend is if we send off any of these guys in sell mode, we try to regain higher rated prospects instead of draft picks. Guys drafted in '20-22 that aren't established yet but go along with our draft window of players. They would be further along.

$70.6m is the cap floor. We're eating a lot of it up right now, but letting some players with term go to other teams really opens up some space for us later. Plus, we can always trade for an LTIR guy to take up cap space.

Can the team poach an already employed coach currently with a team? I think that is extremely doubtful.

A mid-season hynzy replacement (which i think is low probability) would most likely be a promotion for Cronin IMO.  No new expenses to the payroll besides Cronin's raise, while OCL pays Hynze thru next season.

Just to say that happens, what becomes of the kids in Iowa? Are they robbed of another developmental season with nobody really to coach them? Why not just elevate Capuano?

They'll never miss what they never had.  Seriously though, any stiff they bring in is at worst a lateral from what been happening in IA during bill's tenure

This is hynzy and bill's handpicked guy to fix the PK?  You want this fucking guy in charge?

Trenin has got to go. 3.5 million per year? Seriously. In the last 5 games I have watched him whiff on at least 8 shot attempts (completely miss hitting the puck) and like 3 games ago he even missed the net by 5+ feet. Is he drunk? Or is he that bad?

I'd rather find out that he's been playing drunk.  Again, who's pre-scouting these players before we're offering contracts?  But P-O'lantern, he was a serviceable big body during those 6 playoff games...that makes Trenin even more frustrating because he's proven he's not capable of a hockey play so for him to contribute anything he needs to put in some effort thru hustle and he's not doing that now either.

Detroit had the cheat code of half the Red Army team being on the roster.  But yeah, they have missed the playoffs a lot and have been drafting in the top 10 over those years and their future is way brighter than the mid twenty draft picks Minnesota has had for the past 20 years.

That's not really the point. The point is that over Detroit's playoff years, they were not able to restock the cupboard. Sure, they found some good players, but look at how long their playoff drought has been.

Billy bet on every player repeating their 21-22 season performances. 👎🏾 BUZZ! Wrong answer. And most of them are locked into NMC/NTCs.

This is true, but it's not impossible to trade them, you just need their permission. The thing he did do was make the M-NTCs at the end of the contracts. Really, those guys are probably making market price right now, or, perhaps with Kapflation, they might be value guys. But even with value guys, ELCs still beat that!

Great points of clarity and detail. They aren't impossible to move (trade) it's just more restrictive, obviously, thus making them worth less due to the more limited trade partners.

BTW: "Kapflation" 😂😂😂😂😂

Perfect example of why you should never hire your buddies. Did both Billy and John think that the day would never come? Did they honestly believe they were going to take this team to the cup and ride off into the sunset? Hynes was a horrible hire, he wasn't the best man for the job, not even close. He's just one of Billy's beer drinking buddies.

Quote

Minnesota is off to a familiar start because it refuses to change. Guerin has been the GM since 2019, and the Wild promoted him to president after they lost in the playoffs. They still lean on players past their prime and struggle to integrate prospects into the NHL.

The Wild remain in a vicious cycle because they keep doing the same thing while expecting a different result. At some point, they need to embrace change.

This sums up the Wild and how poorly managed this team is from the very top. Leipold is a horrible judge of character and has yet to make a good hire. He hired a name, not a competent general manager. Billy has done what was asked of him, "just make the playoffs every year". While that task isn't easy, it's a lot easier than building a championship team. All of this teams' woes are self inflicted, mostly by Billy himself. He is NOT qualified or smart enough to run an NHL franchise. His multiple five year plans are failures. He has failed to lift this team any higher than it was. It's actually worse off than before he was hired. This is supposed to be the payoff season and look what he's built....failure. There is no magic wand or shining knight that's going to propel this team into the second round of the playoffs this season. That is the bare minimum for this team after cap hell, shackles off, Christmas morning promises.

Both Billy and John need to go and Leipold needs to let someone else run the franchise and make the hiring decisions. It's the ONLY way this team moves forward and upward.
