Article: Should the Wild Target Mason McTavish In A Rossi Trade?

It makes sense for the Wild, yeah.

Similar to Buffalo though, it doesn't make sense for the Ducks.

If I were them, I'd be demanding we add an Ohgren or a Yurov to the deal.

Rossi for McT is the equivalent of Rossi for B Tchuck.  I get that we're in the dog days and this is a fan site but sheesh.  McT is what Rossi might become after a 10-year Testorine injection regimen.

We'll trade Fred G, Nojo, Spurge, and the remaining cap penalties for McDavid.  It just might work.

Based upon hits per game, skating speed, shot speed, and lack of defense, it seems more similar to Rossi for Boeser than Rossi for Brady Tkachuk.

McTavish has size, but he's not hitting people like Brady T.

It depends on how bad McTavish wants out. I highly doubt he wants to come to MN, which is not a much better situation than Anaheim right now. I also don't think they traded a small center in Zegras for a size upgrade only to undo it with McTavish. They are trying to get bigger too, even at the cost of production.

I've seen a lot of McTavish speculation recently but I don't see why they'd want to give him up. He was a 3rd overall pick who has had a better trajectory to start his career than Rossi when accounting for their ages, on a worse team, with much better size.

It'd be cool if we could land him, but it definitely won't be a one-for-one swap 😞

I would love to see it, but no way Billy G could pull it off.

BG might have better luck trying to get Shane Wright (21 yr 6'0" 200 lbs righthand) out of SEA, they already have Beniers and Stephenson locked up long term, and just drafted Jake O'Brian 8th overall this year.  SEA would probably rather have Wright, still on his ELC over Rossi

Not even close.  McTavish has shown decent offensive ability and nearly zero defensive ability.

Look at Zegras.  He looked great until they asked him to play the OTHER half of the game (defense).  His stats tanked once he was asked to be a complete hockey player.

Maybe McTavish can play both ends and maybe he cant.

At this point by all OBJECTIVE analyses Rossi is the better hockey player.

I'm not saying it will stay that way but its definitely true right now.

You have to remember that the Wild is a defense first team.  Any player that is pure offense either has to be just that or at least somewhat responsible or risks needing a lot of line help to balance that out

It's possible that McTavish might focus on it more being in this system (or Rossi's would be worse in Anaheim), but the Wild need an extraordinary offensive force to make hay when they have been in the 20s the past few seasons.

Loved McTavish’s game in the World Juniors. His D game was fine when playing with players his own age and I suspect it’ll improve as he gets older/more experienced. I’m all in on bringing him here. He’s also got the “grit” Guerin craves. Saw a podcast recently that proposed Rossi, a first, and another player (Ohgren?) for McTavish. I still have high hopes for Ohgren though.

I think McTavish has the potential without a doubt, but his defensive game lacks and even though he is big, he doesn't throw his body around.  He had 8 more hits than Rossi last year.  Rossi a first and a top prospect is something I would give up for a proven top line two-way player but seems a bit steep to me for McTavish.

"suggests that the Wild don’t want to go over $5 million on a new deal for Rossi." GREAT

And at the same time they are saying they will match any offersheet

Well I doubt very much that offersheets will come in below $5 million

The funny bit is always the size argument . It is useless

An inch can be easy corrected with skates and if a player is 5.9 or 5.11 with same weight you need a magnifying glass to spot the difference

A little late on this trade.  They should have really thought about trading for Mason last summer.  I would have gladly given Spurgeon to the Ducks for this guy.  Now he has shown that he can be a top line guy on any NHL team.

The Wild should be looking for a high first round guy on a bad team that is on an ELC right now.  Someone from the 2023 or even 2024 draft.  Pick a center drafted and say what would random bad team want for this guy.  Side not Anaheim is not a bad team anymore at least on paper with Quinnville as coach.  After the season that might change but right now I doubt the Ducks are going to give up Mason MacTavish for anything.

Once again, for all those saying Rossi is too small:

The kid is 23, and just put up a season as a CENTER where he was 75th percentile in offense AND defense. So, he's 23, he's better than 3/4 of the league on both sides of the puck, and everyone wants to send him out because he's not 6'2"? Seems to me he's demonstrated that he is a high-talent player with room to further improve his game.

For all of the talk of size and the "he was good defensively against his peers", McTavish would be equal on offense and a HUGE drop on defense.  I can't see Billy making that swap, but then again, I don't know why he hasn't paid Rossi already.
