Article: God Help Me, I Kinda Want The Stars To Win the Stanley Cup

Nice article, Tony, and some really good comparisons to what the Wild could become. No problem seeing the Stars win it all and watching Granlund, Dumba and Oerttinger celebrate. Modano, too, probably.

For me there's just something sentimental about the Oilers and the Cup finding its way back to our friendly neighbors to the north. I'm in my 60's and loved watching Edmonton in their hay day. Nothing against the other three remaining teams, but it would be nice to see the Cup where there is snow and ice and cold.

I like to see teams who have never won a Cup before bring one home but that's not going to happen this year. I think there is only nine teams left on that list the Wild being one of them. If it can't be a team that hasn't won before I like to see players the Wild have traded away get their ring. Dallas has a Dumba, Grandlund and Steel so I have no problem seeing them win one.

I hated Dallas for many years. I loathed them the day the Met Center crumbled as I watched it from the MOA parking lot. It was nothing but disdain when the won the cup soon after leaving.

Then I realized. Norm did try to keep the Stars here. He tried to build a destination in combining it with the MOA. Sure, he got a little handsy with the women but when it came down to it (in my opinion), he was on an island against the Metropolitan Sports Commission (corrupt) and had a business opportunity presented to him that had more $$$ than he could refuse.

There are plenty of reasons to hate Dallas, but the Stars moving there isn't one of them.

Sing the song with me every time Dallas scores at home- "Dallas Sucks, Dallas Sucks, Dallas Sucks!"

I'm completely with Skol up top, I just can't stomach it now that all the players I cheered for as North Stars are gone. No, this franchise is based upon thievery, and deserves eternal purgatory. Get them just far enough for disappointment to crumble the fanbase yet again!

In this case, go Oilers.

I have to say I'm rooting for the Canes but tremendously pessimistic they can get any further. I love the way Florida built their team, and it wasn't due to so many lottery picks either. Their team building yielded Barkov and Ekblad on the current team who were lottery picks. Most everything else has been savvy pickups when a player wasn't wanted, a great signing in Reinhart, and a blockbuster trade in Tkachuk.

We could build this same way. We don't even have the lottery picks necessary, but we've found a diamond in our own rough in Kaprizov, and Ek is a lower version of Barkov, but in a similar style. Chisholm is just like a Forsling pickup, we don't have a Bennett pickup yet, but we're poised to be in a good position to get that blockbuster should one become available. Eichel, Rantanen, and Tkachuk have been recent. Another one is probably due to come up at the end of '27.

Billy, don't spend it all, keep some aside to wait and pounce. That's how Shooter would do it!

Here's a thought: Is Rossi developed enough yet? I think he has a couple more levels he can get to. Would it be better to trade him here, or bridge him and trade him when he's up another level? Remember, you're not trading him to get him out, you're trading him to get something that fits us better in.

I'm thinking that's how Billy views it. His view is the only one that matters. Billy has not publicly bad mouthed Rossi like he did Fiala he has used more of a back handed approach. We need to get Ek some help on that line. Pretty obvious who he was talking about. And he has publicly said nothing to support Rossi. He's letting it be known he is on the block. When you don't see value in someone it's hard to get value in return. Billy is a lousy poker player.

Another batch of "Marco Rossi Trade Clickbait Bullshit"

https://www.nhltraderumors.me/2025/05/canadiens-linked-marco-rossi-trade.html

Rossi to Montreal for anything from multiple firsts, a first and/or Dach/Beck, or straight up for Reinbacher.

Can't say I am all too thrilled on anything other than Reinbacher.

I came across this when starting to look nationally today:

Quote

Kate Pettersen: “All right. Well, speaking of players and their carousel. There’s a lot of teams getting to work behind the scenes, and one of those things that we’re hearing is that Ottawa is looking for something very specific.

They’re looking for a right-shot top-four defenseman. Who are they looking at? And who do you think could end up being that guy?

Pagnotta: “Yeah, they join about 10 other teams, 15 other teams that would love to add the same thing, Kate. But yeah, it was reported earlier this week that that’s something they’re looking for

from NHLtraderumors. If 10-15 teams are looking for an RHS top 4 defender, it seems like we should have people backed up out the door looking at Spurgy. The quote was taken in reference to negotiations with Rasmus Anderssen and the Flames. With the cap going up, this seems like a perfect time for teams to fit a guy like Spurgeon into their team.

I'm not saying at all that Spurgy isn't valuable on this team, but I don't see him around for a cup run. I would rather have Jiricek getting acclimated on pairing 2 with Brodin and re-route that $7.5m contract into offense.

Let's just assume that Spurgy has a similar 10 team list. My guess would be Canadian teams - Edmonton, Columbus, Buffalo, NYI and NJD. That seems to lead plenty of teams who might be looking for a top 4 RHS defender. I might even switch out Columbus for NYR since Spurgy seems like more of a small town guy and has experience with Evason.

I think if Guerin is looking to move him, this might be the best time to do so. I think you take advantage of the ability to backfill cheaply and switch captains which needs to happen.

Spurgy is from the Edmonton area so that may be a preferred spot.

So, the rumor for Reinbacher, are they quoting Kalisha?

Looking at what Guerin likes, I'm thinking Kirby Dach + '26 draft ammo. Dach would fill a whole and has yet to break out offensively. He fulfills what Guerin has said: Someone who can help Ek, comes from the right side and is 24 with a 6'4" 225 lb. frame.

While he doesn't replace Rossi in the skill area, he does fill a void. I could certainly see bringing Brock Nelson in, letting Yurov play center but Nelson take draws, and going with an Ek-Nelson-Dach down the middle trio. Those are the things that Guerin finds important. Would that help us? I think it does come playoff time assuming good health.

That's why I took Edmonton off his list. While I think it's a long shot that they could afford him, there's always that back of the mind dream that he was playing for the Oilers winning the Cup.

I missed the news that Lou Lamorillo was out in NYI. I assume he retired. If this is the case, the new GM, Darche, may want to go full overhaul which would probably be pretty smart. That would mean that guys like Lee and Barzal would be on the block, and I'd say that NYI's rebuild is close to half way complete. They've got a good goalie and several good young defenders. Now it's about rebuilding the offense.

I'd also assume that their style is about to change. With Lou gone, I would say that takes out a GM who was always trying to get the best out of a deal.

I hope Yurov and to a degree Liam O can bring cost effective skill. Mitch M’s upcoming contract will reset just how much $ skill players command with the cap rising. I have been watching Florida carefully, they have finishers all throughout their lineup but not necessarily flashy high cost players. Give me a couple of guys like that. Meanwhile I don’t see a lot of risk with adding players like Dach. Charlie S. Is one of the prospects I’m interested in seeing soon (2026). as well.

I think Stramel would have to have a really great senior year at MSU to get added to the big club right off the bat. I think he will need some time in the A to get up to speed.

Absolutely he'll need time in the A. Even a great season with MSU wouldn't prepare him to jump 2 leagues. I'll be happy he's got his confidence back.
