This is exactly why we should have been sellers at the TDL.  Imagine if we had traded away Spurgeon, Nojo and Zuc at the TDL.  $12 million more in our pocket and draft picks galore to work with.  I like Spurgeon and Zuc.  Great players, but at their age they are not a part of the SC team we are building to make a run at it for the next 5 to 7 years.

Mojo yes, Zucc maybe, but Spurgeon is a no from me.  Trading him probably requires retention, and the Wild still need his blend of speed and awareness.  We don't know whether Buium or Jiricek are worth it.

Besides, dumping Spurgeon means keeping Chisholm or Merrill, or putting Bogo on 2nd pair...God help us.

there seems to be an assumption in this article that Mitchy is going to re-sign with TOR.  His last shift in game 7 as he skated back to the bench he had to sidestep a jersey thrown on the ice, and got showered by a beer a fan threw into the bench.  

Also, every time he touched the puck the home fans booed him.

Consensus, right now, seems to suggest he's on his way out of TOR.

It doesn't mean any of that. Jiricek jumps into the #4 spot, Buium is in the #5 spot. Jiricek and Brodin are partners. In this scenario, Bogosian stays on another year in the #6 spot and Chisholm is resigned for a nominal amount in the #7 spot. Chisholm is a young player who is fine in that role. There's also Lambos who should be about ready.

At some point, we have to insert these young guys and let them play. Yes, there will be mistakes, but that's how players learn, and we have to deal with it. We should have 5 new young players on this roster next year. Spurgeon and Zuccy are merely the aged veterans supposed to lead this group. Zuccy has an NMC so moving him is completely up to him.

The numbers above have been revised, I think the 1,2,3 is over $7m now.

I don't think we could have even offersheeted Knies at $7m. But, if Marner is leaving, would they be willing to do a Knies for Rossi to fill that empty center slot?

An unproven Jiricek getting Top 4 minutes is almost as scary as putting Bogo there.  At best Chisholm has some experience there, but he's also 3-4 years older.

Spurgeon will be a hard loss.  No doubt.  Was our best d-man this year in the playoffs.  But he will be 36 this next season and I have a lot of confidence in Brodin, Faber, Mids, Jiricek, and Buium.  We need 1 more.  I liked what I saw from both Jiricek and Buium.  20 games getting solid ice time and they will be where we need them.  It's time for Zuc to call it quits.

I want a team that competes for 5 to 10 years.  We have limited talent this year in free agency.  So set the stage but don't over spend.  Look to the TDL to complete the roster.. but you must have money.

Jiricek and Buium are both fast and can recover better than Bogo.  I still can't figure out what happened to Chisholm.  He was playing so well... then wham...all confidence in his game was gone... and it showed.

Maybe he had a “good” conversation with Billy and Hynes and was told he was one shift away from centering the 4th line to unlock the winger’s potential.  (Heavy sarcasm).

I like this as a hockey move if it doesn’t also involve getting Nelson as a secondary move.  I am concerned that Billy will overpay (term, money and clauses) for Nelson.  If the Knies/Rossi move happens, the Wild will likely need another Center unless Yurov is expected to play line 2C for the entire year (not get injured) and produce 50+ points.  I would love for Billy to get creative and package (Brodin, Spurgeon or Zuccy) along with a pick or prospect for a defensive responsible, young center with upside.  A 24-26 year old two way player with 40+ points.

I would prefer to keep Yurov, Ohgren, Buium and Jiricek (probably Wally too).

I remember saying we should be sellers.  I hated the trade for Nyquist and I think it was for no other reason than Guerin tried to prove that he would make up for the stupid mistake of extending Nojo over Nyquist in the first place, and he compounded it by making a dumber mistake.

There was no reasons to make that trade, we were dead in the water.  People thought we were just a piece away and I said we were dragging a corpse into the playoffs.  I got the typical refrain from Minnesota rubes:  "You are not a REAL fan!"  

I am, but I am a realist.

That tends to happen sometimes when you assist on two opponent goals in the span of two weeks...

I don't think the author watched games 5 and 7 of the Leafs/Panthers series. Toronto about to do major rebuild, with Knies being re-signed to be a big part of it all...

I think Kotkaniemi could be had. He's an Ek type of center who hasn't really hit his offensive stride yet and is 24.

I agree with you on this. While I wouldn’t have made the trade, I was excited initially thinking about how he produced last time in limited games. I told myself he had an off year on a bad team who moved him off the first line and PP. well, he turned out to be the biggest bust. I was surprised JH didn’t bench him and take a chance on a younger, larger forward like Ohgren. 
 

surprisingly Nojo played better, though still only flashes. When he was physical he was effective but you could see he would get hurt and revert back to his passive play. 
 

I’ve watched every playoff game and it’s clear you need to be heavy. That why the 4th line wingers were the most successful. Too bad their talent level didn’t allow them to convert more. I would have put Hartman with them and made them the 3rd line. 
 

agree BG will make some dumb moves because he feels pressure to act now to keep KK.

Knies has to sign the offer sheet and has stated he has no interest in going somewhere else. 

Until he says he wants out of Tor or they start low balling him this is a nothing story.
