Article: What Would A Marco Rossi Long-Term Deal Look Like?

I think some people are thinking we can get Rossi for Ek money.  That isn't feasible for three reasons.

1. Ek signed his contract to a bargain bin deal in hindsight.  I don't think anyone could have expected the defensively sound third liner to become a 60-65 pt player on good years.  Rossi got to that point total about 3-4 years earlier.  Ek offers more intangibles, but he has topped out given his age.  Rossi seems a better playmaker/offensive minded player with years to grow in contrast.

2. Rossi is signing his deal in a time when the entire league knows they are getting $20m-$30m more to work with in three years time.  ANY players deal going forward is going to reset the floor.  $7-8m is going to be the 2nd line money standard in no time.  No one is asking Rossi to be paid Kap money.  He's going to be paid what others like him are being offered.

3. Rossi is shoring up a position of historical weakness.  Outside of Koivu, Staal (for 1-2 seasons), Hartman (for one season), and Ek now, who is giving the team what Rossi does?  For a team so starved of any and all players down the middle, you want to dump a guy who has helped solve that issue?  It's the "if we get rid of Foligno, we have to sign another guy to do his job.". Signing anyone to do what Rossi gives you is going to cost the same, if not more. We don't know if Yurov bcomes a Rossi or better.  We KNOW Rossi has NHL and Wild experience.  I'd rather the team pay a guy who busted his ass each off-season for the THIS team, not elsewhere.  Excuse me if I'm not lining up for the next PLD albatross.

this cap rise is good and all but it's a gradual increase and we have to make a decision this upcoming off season.  paying Rossi what the market will call for 2nd liners in few years will mean virtually no other moves for next year. and that means going with the same core as this year. the same core that proved that it can do almost nothing without it's leader. so chill a bit about Rossi. you want to pay Rossi 10 MM? because 2LC is going to cost that in 3-4 years.

i am not calling for him to be gone. i am calling for a GM to do what's best for the team. perhaps it's to sign Rossi short/long term or maybe it's a trade (you can sell high on him, as you would on Boldy, and use the saved money to go a different route). It all depends on Billy's vision. If Kap is the primary goal - then Rossi or Boldy will be dealt (unless they come in cheap). If Kap is not - then they'll sign Rossi and Nelly.

trades happen, players are moved around. if you are married to your players - you can miss out on something special. and of course vice versa - you don't want to let one get away.

When did I say give Rossi 10m?  I said 7-7.25.  Big difference.  That difference is cap space the Wild can use for Buium, Yurov, and maybe even Jiricek's contract.

I'm not married to the idea the Wild are world beaters next year.  Cap relief is cap relief: it isn't an excuse to pull a Nashville.  Next year SHOULD see addition by subtraction, not adding stupidly high contracts to people who haven't played in the Wild's specific system.

Rossi has shown promise in said system, and should be rewarded.

Rossi, Buium, Yurov, Jiricek ..... those are players that wait their turn. if some moron wants to throw 8+ on Rossi - then they can pay up and you laugh at them. then repurpose the money on bigger fish.

you build a team with a focus on one player - Kaprizov. and you do not hand cuff yourself with another massive contract without knowing exactly who you are getting. not sure why we are rushing to AGAIN bid against ourselves. wait and see how they perform when it matters.

Next year....next year....next year - Kaprizov will be gone - but yeap - there is always next year

Also, hey, maybe Yurov or Buium are those $10m contracts just waiting to happen.  We just don't know.  I want the Wild to be potentially great for 5-7 years, not one.

you have a superstar RIGHT NOW but you are waiting for one? Kaprizov is right in his prime, try going off HIS timeline for once, instead of Yurov or Zeev or Rossi. Building on something 5-7 years from now is a time WITHOUT kaprizov. he won't stick around to waste any more years than he has to so that he can see another average wild team.

short-term deal for Rossi

This seems like the most likely scenario. Billy’s made a bunch of conservative long term signings. At some point he’s going to get forced into some short term ones, which carry a different kind of risk. He tried to get Kap to 8 years. He got 5 as an example. So those three years are coming in at approximately plus $18M in cap. ($9 vs $15).

You need to read my book. It’s called the Percentage Paradox. In it I mathematically breakdown the percentage chances in any given year of winning the SC. The top teams typically seek out a minimum 3 year window at around 16% chance. So five times the league average. Using this strategy a team’s chances of winning it all are optimal. Note: You just read my book it’s free.

If KK walks I think you should be the awarded “Poster of the Year.” That’s if he walks for any reason. If he walks because the Wild missed key opportunities as you’ve expressed them Hockey Wilderness needs to put you in an editor’s chair. I have no idea what’s in store but you have to admit the Wild are becoming an exciting team to follow.

How quickly we forget. I don’t want to get reminded the hard way. I think Dallas did a great job of developing multiple options at center. It sure pays dividends come playoff time. The Aves getting Necas kinda fits this build style as well.
