The article I quoted from above talks about him watching the game through Guerin's eyes and understanding the decision that was made about him. Signing with CBJ and retiring barely into the season was another indication that he was cooked, like we all knew. The trouble with that is that the player is usually the last one to know (see Goligoski). From the article, it appears that his ex wife and he are still living in the area, and he is helping to coach his youngest son who should be 9 this year. Koivu's Edina house was sold in Feb 2024, but his divorce looked wildly messy from the court docs, so who knows... Then again, Jon Merrill sold his Edina house in July 2024, but that doesnt mean he's left the area.

Merrill might be getting ahead of things and looking for rentals in the Des Moines area? I would find it difficult if Koivu left the area yet his ex wife stayed behind with the kids. If Koivu left the area, my suspicion would be a return to Finland. Has anyone local seen or heard of him lately?

Koivu was served as he walked down the tunnel to a game: Quote As I was exiting the ice and going into the tunnel that was packed with loud fans surrounding it, I heard someone yell, “You’ve been served,” and I saw papers fall from the top of the tunnel onto the floor in the area where I was walking. I did not make eye contact with the person that yelled; the top of the tunnel is high enough that I cannot sign jerseys for fans that are up there, and there were so many people that I did not know who yelled or dropped the papers. The security guard rushed over to pick up the papers since people are not allowed to throw things at players. I stopped and asked the security guard what they were, and I saw that they were divorce papers. The security guard brought the papers to a team staff member to hold for security purposes until the game concluded.
