Article: Taking Advantage Of the Salary Cap Increase Starts With Extending Brock Faber

Recommended Posts

I think it is pretty safe to sign Brock Steady to 9x8.

I also think we should go after a big FA in 2025.   Just do a one year deal in 2024 for a risky player like Vrana and be able to move on if it doesn't work.

NO

You do NOT pay Faber more than 8 mil. if he wants more trade his ass along with Boldy for svechnikov and orlov

You stop this nonsense about paying Rossi potentially 6 mil per and instead start planning to include him in a package for a star

you do not assume Marat or Ohgren are proven commodities and expect some hiccups in their development and likely regression so start tempering that expectation a bit

You run away from Vraba, Riley Smith and Perron and one year rental of has- beens

YES
You finally understand that acting as a buyer next year is a moronic-plan,  given that you only have THIS year to show the direction to your best player. That’s it, no more talk making  Faber a priority- he is Not a priority! He can get in line and wait his ass. Show Kap that he is a priority finally. Give him a C and give him big help this year.

Objectively false.

Kaprizov is already signed up to the summer of 2026, so if they don't panic and continue to build towards a strong 25-26 season, they should be able to extend him before next year, even if that's just 1-2 years at $12M. There's still time to build for the 25-26 season and have KK97 around after that.

Getting development from the youth this year, then filling in talent upgrades where needed for 25-26 seems like the better option. Johansson and Fleury will come off the cap next season, along with the $13M they'll gain from the Parise and Suter cap hits falling down to just $1.666 for a few years. Faber will take up at least $8M of that, but likely less than $9M. They'll still have space to add some real talent.

They'll be closer to contending if they don't trade away good players this year.

I agree that KK97 is #1 but your methodology here seems like KK97 wants the team to start groveling in his presence.

Maybe KK97 doesn't want the C?  Maybe KK97 is not one of those guys who needs a gold star?  I think KK97 is actually the anti prima donna to be honest.

One way to make KK97 want to stay is to show him that you pay talent what it is worth.  Faber is worth 9M in the current market.  Undercutting him or trading him because he wants market value might make KK97 go WTF.

KK97 is the priority.  Make him the highest paid NHL player in the league when the time comes next season.  In the meantime... sign the true Calder winner what he is worth.

Cheers bro.

I mostly agree. Except for Faber. Kids a natural. You don’t lose young D men with his skills.

how is it objectively false?

Kaprizov has not said anything publicly that he is excited or willing to spend the rest of his life in MN. He has won nothing with MN. And has seen this group maxing out their potential. Without an immediate boost, he will walk.

The management and people on this site think that current progression is fine? Or that he is fine wearing an A or this is Fabers team - so let's talk about him and give him MORE money than Kap. HA it is not Faber team! Wild best wake up tomorrow and start handling KAP as their number one priority.

Objectively we have to say - we are in deep SHIT if we do not lay out our cards this year and go in and try to max out our potential. If next year comes around and all we have is another pick and "growth" from our current core, then Kap will just wait it out and we loose him for nada or some picks.....oh how fun! we will read non-stop columns praising our never ending prized youth movement. exciting times indeed. F man - this is not rocket science. You have one responsibility to the owner, team and fans, and that starts and ends with Kaprizov. He is the best player we got, the best player we ever had, and may be the best player we will ever have, but no - we have to worry about Rossi or talk how Faber will get his 10 mil, or whatever other noise.

you are not going to loose him.  if all he wants is money, then do you really want that to be driver? i mean look at how florida built the team - by people taking some cuts. giving 10+ mil to a 2nd year player is not going to sit well with EK and Kap.

seriously give him 6 or 7 years and 7.5 mil per.  that is it. lay it out - if he doesn't take it, then play on.

there is no need to over exaggerate here with groveling. its a reality that Wild need Kap. and my suggestion is not to lay down and beg, but instead for smart managing your year so that you show Kap that this is a good team and his good team. I am pretty sure Kap would love a C. Remember his idol is a captain and has been with the same team for his career. I bet that would be something cool for Kap to do as well.

I am not sold on giving Faber near 10 mil per contract after just one year. just not. play it out. make Kap a captain. and make a splash at the draft time and let Kap know what winning means and it could be very fun again with Wild (not getting to be that sole driver and getting pounded by Jets and other friends from Central division)

Keeping 97 here and happy is Guerin’s 1st 2nd and 3rd priority.  I believe Guerin understands this but I’m not sure he’s got the brains to pull it off, so we end up with a batch of Carson Lambi who peak as a seventh d man, when we deal 97 at deadline

I’d much rather have 97 here long term than 30 can’t miss prospects we may or may not ever see in wild jersey.

#4 The Wild need to figure out a way to get more mileage out of their up and comers playing on ELCs. Heck the way things are going the Wall isn’t even getting a full NHL season on his. It’s all about value contracts in today’s cap strapped NHL.

3-4 year deal at 6-7mm per year for Faber. If he wants more trade him.  He won’t as he wants to stay home. Stop throwing stupid 9-10mm numbers around.  Maker is 9mm and way better than Faber.  Don’t overpay.  Same with Kaprisov when his contract is due.  Teams don’t do well having 3-4 guys taking up to much of the cap.  Better to have a well rounded team of guys making 4-5mm

Faber at $8M-$8.5M would be fine on a long-term deal. They shouldn't consider going over $9M, and $8M would be the 2nd highest paid player on the team. I suspect Faber would be happy at $8M for at least 5 years. The question is whether his agent would allow it to be that low. Talking anything over $9M seems crazy though.

Kaprizov has not said anything publicly about wanting to get out of this situation either. Extending for a year or 2 wouldn't be the rest of his life, so he could agree to that with a heavy NMC that restricts trades only to the destinations of his choice and have major control over how long he stays.

We both agree it's incumbent upon Guerin to make sure that KK97 wants to be with the Wild, we simply disagree on what will make him believe the future looks best.

there is no way in hell Kap will extend for 2 years with us. his last contract he was pushing to go the minimum years and that tells me he wants to control his destiny more than anything. if we cannot show him that his destiny lies here in MN, then he won't sign on to wait patiently while pausing on his prime years. we cannot wait for 2025 to start cause then the wheels would be in motion for him to leave .... if they are not already. but that is an unknown to all but him. so we do the best we can. either we continue on with status quo and plug our holes with has beens like riley smith and david perron and jacob vrana and jason zucker and matt cullen and combine that with our highly rated list of prospects that are ready to "blossom" at any moment now (waiting....) or we aggressively push for something more drastic.

This plan is just not a good one given where we are at -

Rossi + Stramel + Whatever the crappy D core of youngsters we have in AHL that can't crack our depleted lineup for years now (last one was Brodin? yikes - that  gives us confidence in our D up-and-comers) + Marat (nothing special yet, he won some faceoffs and we celebrate it like its something amazing) + Yurov (let's wait and see when he comes what kind of a player he is, temper that expectation a bit....is he going to be here only to tag out Kap - hooray for that) + Ohgren (oh my very very excited - have we already said that he is the next Peter Forsberg or Sundin? if not i am sure its only a matter of time till we start seeing comparison using some fancy models.

Draft time - i expect to see some drastic change Billy. And Kap receiving his C by then. Otherwise - you are useless.

is that brodin nugget true?!?   Fletcher s busy trading the future for veterans at end of his time.  Fenton flushed the johannsen pick.  And guerin&co took dmen early and often (hunt might be a regular this year).  Wow that’s quite a long 0-for streak

I stand corrected.  Johansson was Fletcher final FU to the Wild fanbase:

The first monumental event under Fenton’s reign, he did not even get to take part in: the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. It was still Chuck Fletcher’s scouts/staff running the draft, and by the way they drafted in the first round, it seems they were lacking inspiring leadership – reaching for Filip Johansson, who was not supposed to go until the late rounds of the draft

Fucking chill out.  We won't know what happens until it happens.

you are right, we should all chill!! why don't we just do nothing but give rossi 6 mil, faber 9.5 mil, bring in perron for 5 years, bring up our prospects and let Kap coast until he either leaves or gets traded for a HAUL of course (Gabby got us a ton of value back and set us on a track to prosperity for years after he was gone, and Kap is no Gabby - he is replaceable; instead let's salivate at the thought of how many minnesotans we can get on our roster - one of us, yippee).

Panicking a year down the road is just going to make you stir crazy.  The answer is simple.

Kap leaves, and the Wild get nothing out of it: Well fuck, sucks to be us

Kap leaves, and the Wild recoup what they can: Well, they did what they could.

Kap stays: Well fuck, guess we're good then.

Whatever happens happens.  You're act as if the team isn't trying to bend over backwards to keep him AND stay competitive.  I would love to keep Kap forever, but if it doesn't happen, there are way bigger things in the world to worry about...like a meteor coming to kill us all or something, or just paying rent and getting food.  It's just a hockey player.

Creating a conclusive fantasy about what lies in KK97's head is the exaggeration.  We don't know what he wants, we are just talking out of our asses for our own entertainment... which is why we are here. 😛

I don't think Kap wants a status symbol.  He has already earned the respect of everyone on the team.  He wants to win.  Faber is going to be a big part of that.

I am totally psyched about what Faber brings.  The specifics of his next contract are hairs I'm not interested in splitting but his value is obvious.  He is a safe bet.

Now where we totally agree is about him getting targeted (by more than just the Jets)  That is a problem that needs to be fixed.

we don't know - correct. but to NOT plan and just be content with how things are progressing is foolish. that is my biggest point here. it is a MUST to do it THIS year. to just say - oh whatever Kap is fine as is. No need to give him a C, he is likely happy with an A. Let's just continue to praise Rossi and Faber and our solid youth movement.  No worries about Kap - he is not that good anyway. Once he is eligible - we'll just give him a small raise and all will be fine.  If not, hey we were ok once Gabby left, and he is no Gabby. No no no - he is def not 💩

Its foolish. Faber can wait his turn. Rossi lovers can deal with him being shipped out if it brings in someone who compliments Kap better. All these prospects and picks are also NOT a priority and should be taken full advantage off by using them in trades when they actually still carry some sort of bloated value that eventually will deteriorate as it has with most of our prospects. thats it. that's the reality. you can live in fantasy land, i choose reality.
